Kellen Winslow Jr. (not a good dude)

Read This Trite - I officially hate the Browns till he's gone

The words still come out of his mouth with an abundance of confidence. It's easy to pick up the arrogance in his voice - even miles away on a cell phone - as he makes his way through a busy highway in Cleveland. He answers every question with little doubt.

There is not a single pause between sentences, just more samples of why he is quickly becoming a marked man - or kid - before ever stepping on a professional football field.

Kellen Winslow, Jr. isn't backing down an inch.

"Why should I take anything back? I know I can perform at the highest level of professional football and can't wait to prove it to everybody," says Winslow, who as of the weekend had not reached a contract agreement with the Browns.

"A lot of people have their opinions of me and I know most of them aren't very good. But I'm just a guy who believes in his abilities as a football player, period. There's nothing wrong with that, right? I don't care what you say you need to be confident going in."

He's right. It's alright to walk with your head held high and a little strut in your step, no matter who you are and what you do to put food on the table. But it's hardly a surprise coming from the former University of Miami All-American tight end.

Still an NFL virgin, Winslow, the sixth overall selection in the draft, is just being himself even if it sours his already damaged reputation in a locker room filled with old pros (when he gets there).

Winslow, taken one spot after former teammate Sean Taylor, has elected to skip out on the start of training camp with the Browns as his agents Kevin and Carl Poston continue their attempt to work out a contract that would surpass $40 million.

Good or bad, Winslow is reportedly looking for a deal that would make him the league's highest paid tight end without ever playing a down. He is outspoken, arrogant, confident, complex, selfish and unpredictable. He can fill a reporter's notebook one day and wave off everybody the next.

And he doesn't make any apologies.

"I'm my own person," says Winslow. "I don't have to go about life fulfilling other people's wishes. I want to do things for myself, not because some other person wants me to."

There in part is why many have already labeled the son of the Hall of Fame tight end by the same name a problem child. Nobody will go on the record in Coral Gables, but there were more than a few coaches that were glad to see Winslow go. There were the repeated outbursts out of view, the unsportsmanlike penalties and famed 'I'm a soldier' tirade after a loss to Tennessee last November.

"I admit that I could have handled some of that stuff differently, but I've always done everything with passion. And that's how I have and will always play the game," says Winslow. "'I've lost sleep at night just thinking about being the absolute best player out there. It's something I've always wanted."

The desire to be the best consumes him. It was there even before he became one of the most-highly regarded prep players in the country out of Scripps Ranch in San Diego. It was there way before he became a star at the University of Miami, setting a school-record for most career-receptions (117) by a tight end. It was there before the Browns took him in the draft.

His father aside Winslow was born for the game. Not only is he reckless in the weight room, where he is known to lift until the pain is unbearable, but he plays that way on the field, blocking two defenders on one play and hurdling a couple more a few minutes later.

Winslow doesn't want to be mentioned in the same breath with some of the premier players at his position like Tony Gonzalez, Jeremy Shockey and Todd Heap. He wants to be better. He wants to be at the front of the line.

Winslow may have the typical attitude of a pro athlete who showers in money and adulation. But it's not about any of that. Yes, he's on the verge of adding some more jingle to his bank account, but it's not about the money with him. He wants to be the best - in the worst way.

"It's what I've worked for my whole life," Winslow says.

It shouldn't come as a shock that some of Winslow's ex-UM mates could be heard cheering his exit when he decided to forgo his senior season and opt for the NFL. But Winslow doesn't seem to care.

"A lot of them won't be playing football too much longer," he says. "Do you think I'll be around in a year or two?"

So it's not about money? Right, I know, it never is. No, it's about his huge ego, about wanting the biggest contract when he's never played in the league. He says he doesn't care what anyone thinks, but that's the biggest load of bull out there right now. Everyone HAS to think he's the greatest player ever....or else. That's his attitude....that's his plan.

I have rooted for the Browns for my entire life. I was there for the drive, the fumble, and the Browns move to Baltimore. I waited for the team to come back and was thankful that there was football in Cleveland once again.

Butch Davis has made it more painful to be a Browns fan in the last three years than all of the above mentioned experiences combined. There is no passion on the team. Davis is a control freak who has driven some of the best football minds in the game out of Cleveland. Now Browns fans have Kellen Winslow II. Here is a guy who wants to be the highest paid TE in football, and he hasn't played a down yet!!!

In Miami's high powered offense, THE CHOSEN ONE had 1 touchdown last season. That doesn't exactly blow me away from a guy who is supposed to be the greatest football player we've ever seen. Don't tell me that Brock Berlin couldn't get him the ball. I could get the ball to a TE. The fact is that Winslow looked at last season as a formality to him getting to the NFL ( a la Chris Gamble. I'm still pissed at him for dogging it last season). Listen to a Winslow interview. "Me, I, me, I, I, me, me, I"

I hope Winslow never signs with the Browns. This guy and Butch Davis need to go. The sooner the better. These guys that think Winslow is going to come in and save Cleveland :drunks: make me laugh. This guy is already starting to alienate team mates and fans. That's a great way to start Butch! And who didn't see this coming besides Butch Davis?!?!!?!? The Browns would have been 6-10 with Winslow, they'll be 4-12 without him. The Browns have overtaken the Bengals as the biggest laughing stock in the NFL.

I, too, have been a long-time fan of the Browns. I must admit, though, that I lost a great deal of my interest in them (and Pro football in general) when Modell moved the "real" Browns to Baltimore. I was glad to see another franchise be granted to Cleveland, they deserve one. (Whether you love or hate Cleveland, the one thing that cannot be denied is the tremendous support that the fans have always shown the Browns, win or lose.) Now, the Browns are under the control of Bitch Davis, who seems to be intent upon turning the franchise into a refugee camp for ex-hurricanes. Now, he WASTES a first round, #6 overall pick on this arrogant SHITHEAD Winslow, the self-proclaimed "Chosen One" who (I REALLY hope) may never sign with the team. I hope he has to sit out this season (a la Maurice Clarett...wouldn't that be ironic?) and miss out on a whole year to display his
"magnificence" to the drooling fans of NFL football. I also would love to see a unified effort on the part of ALL NFL franchise owners to band together and, in one unified voice, tell the Postons to go Fuck Themselves! Make it clear...we don't negotiate with the Postons!

(Yeah, I know that won't happen...but it would be nice if it did. I do wonder though, when these teams who have had to put up with the Postons' antics are going to say "enough"?)

Yeah, it came in the first game of the season, and what did he do? He did the Heisman pose, and never scored again all season.

Good luck with the "soldjuh", Browns fans.

So now the Browns are going to break the bank to get this dickhead in camp. Great move out of Butch!! Don't leave yourself any room to sign any talent after the fiasco that is the Browns upcoming season dumb ass.

I also heard on 1460 yesterday that Jim Brown has now offered his services to try and help get Winslow signed. I'm assuming that the Browns don't want to offer Winslow first pick money because he is African American not because he wasn't the first pick.

Only in Cleveland.

Meanwhile, Ben Hartsock lit it up for the Colts in their scrimmage the other day. GREAT JOB BEN!! What a class individual and a great rep for the Buckeye Nation!! Thank God Winslow didn't come to Ohio State.

Put yourself before the team just once Winslow.

Here are my thoughts on Winslow"

"Why should I take anything back? I know I can perform at the highest level of professional football and can't wait to prove it to everybody," says Winslow, who as of the weekend had not reached a contract agreement with the Browns
Take anything back? I dont understand....I thought you had to earn your money and respect in the NFL, I could be wrong.

"A lot of people have their opinions of me and I know most of them aren't very good. But I'm just a guy who believes in his abilities as a football player, period. There's nothing wrong with that, right? I don't care what you say you need to be confident going in."
He is right, alot of people have opinions about him and for obvious reasons, he might believe in his abilities but he is also, arrogant, egotistical and not a team player and thats what I have a problem with, there is a difference between being confident and being just plain cocky in nature, he hasnt even caught a pass!

"I'm my own person," says Winslow. "I don't have to go about life fulfilling other people's wishes. I want to do things for myself, not because some other person wants me to."
him saying he is his own person tells me alot about who he is, he plays a team sport and he is always focusing on his self regardless of the situation.

"I admit that I could have handled some of that stuff differently, but I've always done everything with passion. And that's how I have and will always play the game," says Winslow. "'I've lost sleep at night just thinking about being the absolute best player out there. It's something I've always wanted."
Your damn right he could have handled some of his bs better, like try to be respectful and professional and represent your team in the best manner possible, not get in front of the media and talk about being a soldier! Get real.

It shouldn't come as a shock that some of Winslow's ex-UM mates could be heard cheering his exit when he decided to forgo his senior season and opt for the NFL. But Winslow doesn't seem to care.

"A lot of them won't be playing football too much longer," he says. "Do you think I'll be around in a year or two?"
omg, this guy was disliked by his own teammates! Not just a few, but by the majority, you guys think it was because of his ego? This guy is a cancer and really needs to grow up.

I have been a browns fan my whole life and I was also there during the "drive", the "fumble" and Art Modell stabbing us in the back, I love the browns with a passion but when they moved it took alot of my passion with them.

It became more of a business than a sport and this guy is a prime example of what is wrong with the NFL, it is no longer about pride and passion, its about how much money I can get and individual satistics.

My personal opinion is that the Browns have made a terrible choice and it is just one in a serious of stupid decisions by Butch Davis and his staff. I hope Winslow never plays a down for Cleveland.

Making matters more interesting is that Taylor, who signed the "bad" contract that Winslow refuses to sign anything close to, looked sharp and prepared in tonight's HOF game here in Canton, including running a TD back, if I recall. I guess that just means that Wins-blowass is so much better than his teammate, he doesn't need camp, the preseason, or any conditioning or studying of the game plan. Whatever...enjoy sitting out, assmunch, your crew are busy earning their way.
