I’m not very good at math, and apparently neither is the Kansas football program. Or PR, for that matter.

In early November of 2018, Kansas announced that David Beaty would be fired as head football coach upon the conclusion of that regular season. At the time, athletic director Jeff Long stated that the university would honor the terms of Beaty’s contract, which included a $3 million buyout payable over a six-month period.

For whatever reason when colleges fire their coach they really don't want to honor the buyout provisions in the contract. The end result usually is that the school loses the case and the lawyers just get rich.

Kansas coaching candidates: Lance Leipold, Jeff Monken among top options to replace Les Miles

Where will the Jayhawks turn with Miles out the door?

1. Lance Leipold, Buffalo coach
2. Jeff Monken, Army coach
3. Willie Fritz, Tulane coach
4. Kevin Kane, Illinois associate head coach/outside linebackers coach
5. Sean Lewis, Kent State coach
6. Bill Clark, UAB coach
7. Dan Lanning, Georgia defensive coordinator

Just sayin': I don't think any coach can turn Kansas into a contender for the Big XII Championship; however, the right guy who can get some very good "2nd chance transfers" and "JCs" (along with the usual 3 star recruits) might make them a 6-6 team (which is just about the best that they can expect at Kansas).

Anyway some guy is going to get a windfall contract, i.e. guaranteed $3M+ a year for 5 years, etc. He may be fired after 3 years, but he'll still probably collect the full $15M.

Who do you think would make a good head coach for Kansas?

I agree he'd be a great hire for Kansas. He only makes ≈ $1M a year at Army; but there's job security, very minimal discipline/academic problems (if any) to deal with, not having to recruit against the "big schools", and apparently he's very happy there (per quote above). I have no idea what his buyout is (if there is one); however, he's currently signed with Army through 2024.

Or Kansas could steal his cousin from Georgia.....:biggrin2::

Jeff Monken is a cousin of Todd Monken, the current offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia.

Coming from someone who's dad is a graduate of West Point (class of 1972)....

1. Boo Corrigan is no longer the AD at West Point. Mike Buddie has been the AD at West Point since 2019.
2. Jeff Monken's contract goes through 2024.
3. Kansas is one of the Power 5 conference jobs that is a step down from where Monken is now. The other P5 jobs that I believe would be a step down from Army- Vanderbilt, Illinois, Rutgers, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Oregon State....
4. I could see Lance Leipold or Willie Fritz as replacements for Miles.

The coaching carousel wheels are beginning to spin with more velocity. In less than 24 hours, two Power 5 head coaching positions have become available as Arizona fired Kevin Sumlin and Auburn parted ways with Gus Malzahn.

There are plenty of qualified candidates that will be line for each of those jobs as well as any others that may become available in the coming days and weeks. One name to keep an eye on might be former Baylor head coach Art Briles.

According to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, if Liberty coach Hugh Freeze were to leave for another job, Briles would be at the top of the Flames’ wish list.

Briles, 65, who was fired in 2016 during the fallout of the Baylor sexual assault scandal, has spent the last two seasons as head coach of Mount Vernon High School in East Texas. He led Mount Vernon to the Class 3A Division I state semifinals this year.

He was hired by the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2017 but never coached a game there as intense media scrutiny led the Tiger-Cats to reconsider their decision. Briles resurfaced the next year when he accepted a head coaching job in the Italian Football League.

But Liberty may not be Briles’ only option. The power brass at Texas Tech could make a coaching change very soon, according to sources closely tied to the football program via The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Amid a disappointing second season for coach Matt Wells, the Star-Telegram reports there's a groundswell of support for Briles to take over next season should the Red Raiders move on from their current regime.
