Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed legislation Friday enabling the state to lure the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and Major League Baseball's Royals away from neighboring Missouri by helping the teams pay for new stadiums.Kelly's action came three days after the Republican-led Legislature approved the measure with bipartisan supermajorities -- an unusually quick turnaround that signals how urgently Kansas officials consider making the offers.
Missouri officials have argued that discussions about building new stadiums are still in the early stages. They said construction of a new one typically takes about three years and pointed out that the lease on the existing complex that includes the teams' side-by-side stadiums doesn't end until January 2031.
The measure Kelly signed takes effect July 1 and will allow bonds to cover 70% of a new stadium's cost. Kansas would have 30 years to pay them off with revenues from sports betting, state lottery ticket sales, and new sales and alcohol taxes generated in the area around each proposed stadium.

Since this is the first time he's gone into a season as an NFL backup quarterback, Carson Wentz is still searching for the proper way to go about his job.It's not only about preparing himself to play anymore. He also has to support Patrick Mahomes as best he can.
"We're still early,'' Wentz said shortly before the Chiefs ended their offseason practice. "We're only in here a handful of hours every day and a couple days a week and it's not quite the grind that it will be. So that'll keep evolving and kind of how I find my place, so to speak. But Pat and I already have a great relationship and that'll keep growing and I'll keep finding ways I can help.
"I'll find a way to help him whatever way I can, whether that's off the field, on the field, whatever.''
Chiefs coach Andy Reid prefers to have a veteran with years of NFL experience as a backup for Mahomes, mostly to give him a study partner and sounding board for things he might be seeing in the video room or on the practice or game field as he goes through his preparation. The Chiefs have had veterans Chad Henne, Matt Moore and Blaine Gabbert serve as Mahomes' backups before Wentz.
Wentz, who signed with the Chiefs during the offseason, was with the Philadelphia Eagles for five seasons from 2016-2020. The Chiefs are now his fifth NFL team, and fourth in as many seasons. He made 93 starts in eight seasons with the Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams.
"I thought Blaine did a nice job of [helping Mahomes] when he was here last year," Reid said. "Carson I know did a nice job when he worked with the Rams [last season], had a nice game for him actually when he played for them right at the end there. We welcome him in. We talked to him last year when we were talking to Blaine and he was holding off for an opportunity to possibly start. It was good to get him in this position and if he has an opportunity to play, he has an opportunity to play.
"Carson looks sharp. He's picking things up fast, smart guy, and he fits in well. Seems like a heck of a person, and he's good in that [quarterback] room."

Tuesday's visit between 29-year-old Pro Bowl running back Kareem Hunt and the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs, went well enough that the back-to-back Super Bowl champions are signing him on Wednesday, per CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones. Hunt will begin his second tour of duty with the Chiefs on the practice squad.His signing was necessitated with starting running back Isiah Pacheco heading to injured reserve, per CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones, with a fibula injury that will reportedly cost him the next six to eight weeks. Hunt was cut by the Chiefs in 2018, a year after leading the NFL in rushing yards (1,327) as a rookie in 2017 after a video of him kicking a woman in hotel surfaced.
He has spent the last four seasons with the Cleveland Browns' serving as the Robin to Nick Chubb's Batman. Hunt totaled 2,285 yards and 25 touchdowns with a 4.0 yards-per-carry average in Cleveland. He also caught 147 passes for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns. Hunt ran for 411 yards and a career-high nine rushing touchdowns in 2023 while splitting time with Jerome Ford after Chubb's gruesome knee injury in Pittsburgh. He did average a career-low three yards per carry that season on 135 carries.

Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy arrested in Texas on Friday on criminal assault charge
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested on Friday night in Williamson County, Texas, which is just north of Austin, Texas, where Worthy attended the University of Texas.Fox26 Houston's Will Kunkel was the first to report the news. The police report shows that Worthy was booked on a charge of assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. He's being held without bond, and no court date is available now.
Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs released a short statement after the news was made public.
“We are aware and gathering information."
UPDATE: Worthy's attorneys have since released a statement on his arrest.

Xavier Worthy arrest: Chiefs WR not charged after new details emerge
The latest on the former Texas star and Chiefs rookie wide receiver.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy will not be charged following his weekend arrest in Texas on the allegation of assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation, according to Williamson County authorities. Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick said his office will not press charges against Worthy after interviewing several witnesses."After further investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and further discussion with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy and his attorneys, this case is being declined at this time pending completion of the investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff's Office," an email to the Austin-American Statesman reads. "Mr. Worthy and his lawyers are fully cooperating with this investigation. We will continue to evaluate the case. As is our practice with all declines, should you develop additional information indicative of probable cause in this case, our office will consider that information and may present the case at that time to a Williamson County Grand Jury."
Worthy was released from jail on Saturday evening, a few hours after his legal representation released the following statement on his behalf.
"We are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy's arrest. We are working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation," Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett wrote Saturday. "The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy's residence upon discovery of her infidelity. She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy. We will continue to cooperate with the Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy's innocence."
