Ohio State's Ryan Pretorius is a Lou Groza All-Star of the Week

The Ohio State Buckeyes rolled to a 23-7 victory over Big Ten rival Purdue Saturday and a major contributor was junior place kicker Ryan Pretorius. The 28 year old ?migr? from Durban, South Africa was 3-3 with field goals of 44, 39 and 23 yards. Pretorius, in his fourth year at OSU, walked on after fellow South African and NFL veteran Gary Anderson, a family friend, suggested he explore the possibilities of playing college football in the USA. The 6-0 Buckeyes are in the thick of the national championship race.

On the kick return against Penn State

"Well that kick had a real good hang time, about 4.21. That never should have happened. I can't really tell you what went wrong."

On the special teams unit

"Basically nothing can go wrong. If any one of the 11 guys on the field has a slip up, they will have a fair chance to block it. I get all the praise, but really it should go to all of us. We are all working together."

On coming to America

"I have really just been following a dream. I played soccer and rugby as a kid. Then my rugby career took off. Then my shoulder gave out on me and I heard I could come to America and just kick. When I first got here I put on the pads and couldn?t kick for the life of me, but two year later I went to every college coach in the country begging for a chance and coach Tressel gave me a look."

Ohio State kicker Ryan Pretorius tries not to look his age on a sideline full of players not far removed from high school.

Notre Dame has its syrupy movie about a walk-on who made good: Rudy. Ohio State should have its own: Ryan. Wouldn't Hollywood love the story of Ryan Pretorius, a world-traveling South African rugby player who came to the United States five years ago with nothing but a dream and a kicking shoe?
A guy who spent two lonely years selling shoes and crashing at a friend's house, kicking for hours and days and months on end, just hoping for a chance to play in the NFL?
A guy who one day walked off the street into the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and begged coach Jim Tressel for a chance?

CROSSING OCEAN A COLUMBUS GAIN
South African Pretorius a solid kicker for Buckeyes

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Recruiting in the college football world is a highly refined art. The top players are identified in their early days in high school, then rated and analyzed at a series of summer camps. By the time their senior season arrives, the whole country knows their name, and their college choice. It is rare, indeed, when a premium talent slips under this sophisticated and cross-referenced radar - and even more unusual when he never even makes the screen. Ohio State kicker Ryan Pretorius was not on anyone's recruiting list, due to the considerable geography between him and the nearest tailgate party, and the fact he never played a single down in a football game.

Time might be on Pretorius' side when it comes to NFL

COLUMBUS ? Obviously, Ryan Pretorius has done his homework.
Ohio State?s 28-year-old junior place-kicker doesn?t see time running out on the NFL career he hopes to have because the pros will think he is too old when he is finished at Ohio State.
He?s right on target, much as he has been this season when he has hit 14 of 16 field goals for the Buckeyes.
Age is no handicap for NFL kickers. In fact, it almost seems to be an advantage. When it comes to kickers, they are on a clock all their own.
Usually, NFL teams will choose an older, more experienced kicker over a young guy if everything else is equal.

When are the semifinalists for the Groza determined?

It should be sometime between today and Tuesday. The 3 finalists will be honored at a banquet in Palm Beach on Dec. 4th, but the winner will be announced at the Home Depot show on Dec. 6th.
