Ryan Pretorius is a decade older than some of his teammates - and he's loving it
Thursday, September 6, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Ryan Pretorius was spoiled rotten as a kid.

His family had a Jacuzzi. Tennis and basketball courts. Servants.

Life has changed for the 28-year-old Ohio State kicker. When he moved to Ohio, he slept on friends' floors and had no money. Things picked up last season when he was put on full scholarship.

"I'm living a dream," he said, with an accent that?s a mix of English and French. "I'm dreaming about the NFL, but I've got to take it one day at a time. I have to prove myself today."

Ohio State kicker dreamed of playing rugby before thousands of fans

By RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer
September 6, 2007

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- This is the way Ryan Pretorius always figured it would be, playing big games in front of huge and raucous crowds.

Only he figured he'd be in Paris participating in this week's Rugby World Cup. Instead, he'll be the placekicker for No. 12 Ohio State on Saturday against Akron in front of 105,000 screaming fans at the Horseshoe.

Pretorius, born and raised in South Africa, has made it to the spotlight despite switching sports, overcoming incompetent or unscrupulous agents and team officials and getting turned down by many of the top college football programs in the country.

"It's a crazy story," he said.

As a 28-year-old college junior, he's become an overnight success.
"He's older than some of the coaches, I think," Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie said, laughing.

OSU place-kicker drop-kicks rugby

Ryan Pretorius abandons a pro career in Europe for American football

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Today, the Rugby World Cup begins in France, the United States one of 20 teams competing in the quadrennial competition, touted by organizers as the word's largest sporting event behind the Olympics and soccer's World Cup. Saturday, Ohio State's club rugby team, with about 45 players and a yearly budget around $60,000, will pile into some vans and drive to Bowling Green to open its season.
And Saturday against Akron in Ohio Stadium, the only rugby player most sports fans in Ohio care about will be lining up to kick field goals for the Buckeyes.

This weeks game may be placed in Ryans hands. This may be the first real test Ryan has under fire. Special teams may be the difference. I have supreme confidence in this young man. I'm sure Tress will have the boys ready. Good Luck Ryan!!!

Big night for RP. Great job on the FG's, but it was his depth on the kickoffs that impressed me. I think he played a huge role in determining field position, and was a huge factor in this game. Sometimes, these little things go a long way in deciding who wins a game.

Good observation.

Ahh, kickers all look the same to me. On a serious note, it's a big deal to have someone who can get that touchback. Whoever's doing it, needs to keep it up. I don't see a lot of teams driving eighty yards against this defense.

Good kicked the first one for a touchback and Trapasso kicked the second one for a touchback. Pretorious' kicks were not nearly as successful, but his FG's were right down the pipe. One of those despite a terrible snap.
