K/P Ben Buchanan (official thread)

One of the things I really appreciate about Tressel teams is the kicking and punting. There's a confidence that I feel about that part of the team...I'm rarely concerned. Bringing in fellas like Ben is what makes that possible.

Ben has that strong leg and that confidence you need in the kicker. Glad to have him as part of the team over the next 4-5 years.

Ben Buchanan

Drive for show and putt for dough is an old golf adage that applies to the splendid senior season Westerville Central kicker/punter Ben Buchanan turned in.

During his first three seasons, Buchanan dazzled observers with long field goals and majestic kickoffs through the end zone.
With a commitment to Ohio State already secured, the 6-foot, 195-pounder relaxed and focused more on consistency this fall. The end result was quite possibly the most impressive season for a kicker in Ohio prep history.

13-13 from inside 50. Not too shabby. :p

Obviously speed and timing become more critical at the next level, so comparing Ben's stats with college kickers' stats is an unfair metric. That being said.....exactly 8 kickers in division I have made all of their kicks from inside 50 yards, and only one of them has attempted more kicks that Ben.

Why I love Tressel...

As a student at the Naval Academy, but also a huge Buckeye fan, I was reminded Saturday of the genius that is JT. I don't know how many of you watched the ND vs. Navy game, but I'll tell you what amazed me as I watched. So ND has the ball, 4th and 8 on Navy's 25... game tied, 0:45 left in regulation. As I watched live, I prepared myself for our 44th consecutive loss when I noticed Weis sending out the offense(?). We sack Sharpley to force OT. Finally, after 3OT's Navy pulls off the upset. I guess somewhere in all those #1 recruiting classes Weis has brought in he forgot to sign a kicker that could reliably make a field goal. Tress may not be able to haul in a top 10 recruiting class ('cept this one) every year, (according to Rivals, Scout, ect.) but he has the foresight to value balance and special teams.

So, many may question the Buchanan offer, but I love it. Being able to bank on at least 3 points every time inside the opponents 35 takes pressure off the offense to make something happen, and from what I've read, this kid is special.

Now, back to Ben... Good luck at tOSU and I can't wait to see you win us a few close ones!

Heck...if you guys missed the story.....a kid from Maryland is now on the team that was a professional soccer player (and no, its not Pretorious...he played rugby)

His name is Devin Barclay....there was an article on him in a Baltimore news paper.

The best part about Ben coming in...is the fact he can do both, punt and kick, which means the competetion is only going to be that much tougher....
