K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

Wasn't he asked by an ABC person during the week at what point on the field he feels automatic, and he said something like "our 43".

Somebody with a tape could probably give an exact distance, but the conversation was comparing hitting a golf ball too hard to kicking too hard and they asked Nugent at what point he didn't feel that he needed to kick it hard.

I just have this one little incident to share with you all about Mike Nugent. In December of 2001 i went down to a OSU practice in Tampa when they were getting ready to play South Carolina in the Outback. I took my cam-corder along but I had to clear it with Bob Tucker, Director of OSU Football.

On the practice field i was standing around some OSU players and had no idea who some of them were. This one young man started talking to me and was asking if i was a new media reporter with the camera. I kind of looked at him trying to recognize but I couldn't. I told him i was just a fan and wanted to get some action shots of the practice. He asked where i was from and told him. As we talked i notice that he was not really a big kid like the rest of the players for Ohio State but he did were a high number like 85 and thought he was something like a wide receiver. Somebody else was out there kicking field goals at the time.

We talked about the nice warm weather and said i was lucky to live in Florida. Then a horn souned and they all went to different groupings and that was the end of the talk. When I was home after the 2002 season started, I noticed a number 85 kicking the field goals and it was Mike Nugent, the same young man that was chatting with me on the practice field in 2001 at Tampa. I ran the tape of the practice session and sure enought it was him. And didn't even know it. I think about that incident every time i see him Kick. Yeah.... Nuuuuuuuuuuge is right.

If I remember correctly I think that kick was his first ever, at any level, game winning fg.
I would consider his field goal against Purdue a game winner, even though they didn't know it would be the game winner at that time. Any field goal in overtime has to feel like it's make it or lose.
