Well, that's at least $8,400 a week (minimum practice squad salary) for a few weeks or more.

I read somewhere that the veteran minimum is $12,000. New rules this year were required to even make this signing possible, since he lost eligibility for the old practice squad rules almost 15 years ago.

Yeah, I read a wiki page that said the 2020 minimum for the practice squad was $8,400 but didn't notice any differentiation for a veteran minimum. I hope you're right about the $12,000 minimum...he can make a couple hundred grand if he lasts to Thanksgiving.

After Uncle Sam, his agent(s), and the taxes of the various states in which the teams for whom he played are located, he might have earned just under a million a year average over his career. Definitely not shabby, but I wonder if his current non-football employment is paying $12,000 a week...

My point is that making a good chunk of change is never a bad thing, and that his $16M in career earnings isn't nearly as much as it appears on the surface. I have $1.755M in lifetime earnings, but I'm still working...Not sure what that has to do with his career earnings, which is the only thing I posted.
We all pay taxes. Most of us don't make $16 million, so in the words of you know who:

I don’t think this is any type of a monetary play for Nuge, it’s just smart business for the Cardinals.
With Covid, NFL gave teams extra practice player slots. The Cardinals are holding onto Nuge in event their kicker comes down with Covid. He’s an inexpensive insurance policy. Teams are doing some unusual stuff to prevent a crazy situation crushing them on Sunday (suppose Zane Gonzalez tested positive Sunday morning?)....the Cardinals would simply move Nuge from practice squad to roster. If it happened to a team without a kicker on practice squad (a Sunday morning positive or crazy circumstance) that team would be left with likely the punter handling kicking duties that day. So I think it’s a smart move by AZ through this weird time and good use of an extra practice squad spot.
And it’s free money for Nuge, and access to NFL level facility, so why not? He can always be signed off practice squad to another NFL team as well....so he’s staying ready.
