K Drew Basil (Cleveland Gladiators)

it's weird to me. Why carry more than 1 kicker? I still don't understand why we even have 2 kickers for punting and kicking........why not just recruit one player for both and free up scholly's for more recievers in the class?

Joking aside, nice pick-up.

Basil, who visited Iowa State on Friday, averaged 40.2 yards per punt during his junior season and made eight-of-14 field goals with his long coming from 50 yards.

I'm taking it he's more of a punter than a kicker? Obviously has a leg, but 8-14 doesn't strike me as an elite PK.

I wouldn't be terribly concerned with his percentage especially in high school where your snaps, holds and blocking are mostly being executed by kids that won't be playing football beyond the high school level. Accuracy is something that you can get a lot better at through repetition and teaching, moreso than distance. Being able to kick a ball really far has more to do with talent and natural ability, you can't teach most kids how kick a 55 yard field goal or punt it 60 yards. I'd rather have a kid that can crush the ball and teach him to be more accurate.

If we really offered the punter from wisky too then that worries me a little about what they have seen in Ben. I hope I'm wrong though.
The 'Chanon will likely only play one position, so at least one of the 2010 recruits would redshirt, and thus be 2 years behind Ben. Sounds good to me.

We always have 3 K/P's on roster under JT, always have, always will. It says nothing about Ben, but about the emphasis put on special teams by the coaching staff.

We have Thoma, Pettrey and Buchanon right now, with Pettrey and Thoma both seniors so two spots will be opened.

Competition is always a good thing. Especially with kickers where confidence plays a big part. I'm sure Ben will be fine. The kicking game is a huge part of JT's philosophy.
