K Drew Basil (Cleveland Gladiators)

We always have 3 K/P's on roster under JT, always have, always will. It says nothing about Ben, but about the emphasis put on special teams by the coaching staff.

We have Thoma, Pettrey and Buchanon right now, with Pettrey and Thoma both seniors so two spots will be opened.

In the Tressel era, OSU has had only TWO kicker/punters in a recruiting class. Trapasso in 2004 and Buchanan in 2008. It is much more common for a walk-on or preferred walk-on to earn a scholarship.

I'm not questioning the two offers this year, they obviously don't give out K/P offers to just anyone. It's just very unusual if they would take two in one year.

Keep in mind that we had five--that's five--kickers on scholarship last season: Trapasso, Pretorius, Thoma, Pettrey and Buchanan. With Trapasso and Pretorius now gone, and with Thoma and Pettrey gone after this season, we'll have gone from five kickers to one kicker on scholarship. And although we've had great luck with walk-ons in the past, you can't always rely on finding a great kicker via that route every year. The staff is trying to ensure kicking duty coverage for the next 4-5 years.

True.

I wouldn't be surprised if they planned on taking Basil all along. They were probably hoping to get him to walk on and earn a scholarship but the other scholarship offers may have forced their hand.

I'm pretty sure Nugent came in before Tressel was here, correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought Skeete was a walk-on on an academic scholarship?

I'm pretty sure Pettrey was a grayshirt.

Nugent was in the car with his family traveling to Pittsburgh for a visit when the Buckeyes offered. He was a JT recruit. Skeete was academic and then got in trouble with MaryJane. Pettrey was a Greyshirt and had to wait some time before his ship kicked in.

Nugent came in within a week or so of Tressel being hired.

Skeete signed his scholarship papers during June 2004, but became a walkon after returning to the football program after his arrest and before transferring out. Admittedly, I don't know who it was that was paying for his scholarship, but I do know that took up a football scholarship when he arrived at OSU.

Pettrey was indeed a greyshirt, but all that means is that he was asked to delay enrollment until a time when he would be put on scholarship. It's not like he was a walk-on that earned a scholarship-- the scholarship was promised after sitting out.

Basil to Buckeyes?

Probably even closer to making a commitment is kicker/punter Drew Basil (Chillicothe, Ohio). Basil, who recently camped at Ohio State, landed a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes last weekend. He is set to visit Ohio State again on Thursday. He also has scholarship offers from Purdue, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Air Force.

Nudge was part of Tressel's first class before they started keeping the database for scout.

Sounds like Basil will be the latest kicker to be a Tressel recruit!!
