The Lions will use rookie Aaron Pettrey out of Ohio State in the exhibition season. He's got a strong leg and coach Jim Schwartz indicated that he wouldn't "close the door" on keeping him to handle kickoffs if Hanson doesn't regain full strength.

Placekicker Aaron Pettrey might want to skip the film session from Thursday morning's practice.

The Lions set up to execute an on-side kick, with special teams coach Danny Crossman dutifully outlining assignments to every player on the coverage team. Pettrey, however, kicked the ball into the turf and it bounced only five yards out.

"Well that was absolutely worthless," said one of the coaches.

The drill was immediately scrapped and Pettrey spent the next 30 minutes practicing his high-bouncing on-side kicks most of which did travel the mandatory 10 yards.

On the plus side, he was booming his kickoffs high and deep.

Pettrey's stay likely to be short

In all likelihood, Aaron Pettrey's spot on the Lions' roster is like his black metal stall in the middle of the locker room -- temporary.

Pettrey, a rookie out of Ohio State, is handling the kicking duties for the Lions until Jason Hanson returns from arthroscopic knee surgery.

Hanson, 40, is expected back by the start of the regular season, and Pettrey said no one has talked to him about staying on as a kickoff specialist once Hanson returns.

"It'd be great if I could stick around here, but if not, something else will open up," Pettrey said. "When Jason gets healthy, it's what Jason wants. He was kicking great right before he got injured. Right now it's just kind of wait and see."

Pettrey, whose senior season with the Buckeyes was cut short by a torn ligament in his knee, signed with the Lions in July after spending minicamp with the Carolina Panthers.

He said he's fortunate to have worked with two of the NFL's longest-tenured kickers in Hanson and the Panthers' John Kasay.

"There are some definite similarities between them," Pettrey said. "When they're out there, it's all business. They're out there going through everything, there's not much joking around, it's just get the job done. And that's something both of them do very well. In practice, in film, everywhere."

Bengals sign Ohio State's Pettrey to replace Nugent
By GEOFF HOBSON

The Bengals replaced a Buckeye with a Buckeye Tuesday when they signed four-year Ohio State kicker Aaron Pettrey after he won a derby with two others at rainy Paul Brown Stadium.

Pettrey, a Kentucky native, is a rookie who signed with Carolina as a free agent after the draft. After the Panthers cut him, he hooked on with Detroit for the preseason and was cut the day after he missed his only field-goal try, a 42-yarder against Pittsburgh. He beat out Shane Andrus and Hunter Lawrence.

I bet Nuge and Pettrey are thrilled about the prospect of facing each other in training camp next year for a job. :ohwell:

I asked both of them about that and they both kind of skirted around it, but in a respectful way. Could tell Nugent wishes the best for Aaron and I could also tell that Pettrey wished he would've gotten a job without an injury to a friend.

It was weird. I was doing a story on Aaron over the weekend and he told me he was going to Cincinnati for a tryout. He was excited that he had an opportunity to play for a team he rooted for. Talked to his dad and he said it "would be a dream come true." After talking with both of them, I was really happy for Aaron. Best of luck and congrats to Aaron and his family!

The Cincinnati Bengals signed former Buckeye kicker Aaron Pettrey on Tuesday afternoon.

Pettrey will replace Mike Nugent, another former Buckeye kicker.

On Monday, Pettrey was excited about trying out for the Bengals. On Tuesday, he made the roster of the team he grew up rooting for.

"It's pretty cool," Pettrey said. "My dad is excited. My family is already looking for tickets."

Pettrey's signing came on the heels of Nugent's season-ending knee injury.

Nugent won AFC Player of the Month for September but struggled in November, missing two of three field goal attempts in two games.

"It's bittersweet," Pettrey said. "It's nice being here, but I'd like to see Mike keep kicking this year. Under the circumstances, I wish it were a different route."

Nugent was upset about his injury but happy for Pettrey's opportunity.

"He's a really good guy," Nugent said, "works really hard and is the kind of person Coach (Jim) Tressel likes to bring in. He's one of those people that makes you look at your character and how hardworking you can be."

Pettrey recovered from an MCL tear that kept him sidelined for three games in OSU's 2009 season. Devin Barclay took over Pettrey's kicking duties while he was injured.

"I learned a lot from him," Barclay said. "He's a tough kid. Mentally strong, a great leg, kind of a guy who leads by example. Just a class act all-around."

Pettrey played multiple positions in high school but knew kicking is what would take him to the highest level.

"That's what I really wanted to do," Pettrey said. "Kicking and eventually making it to the NFL, at the highest level."

CHIPPY DEBUT: With the Jeff Reed talk refusing to go away, rookie Aaron Pettrey figures he?s here until someone tells him otherwise. In his NFL debut, Pettrey was able to warm up with three extra points before hitting a 19-yard field goal with no time left in the first half to give the Bengals a 31-14 lead.

?A half-yard shorter than an extra point,? observed long snapper Clark Harris and Pettrey said, ?It was nice of the offense to ease me into it with a couple of nice chip shots.?

He said his best hit was the one he missed, a 43-yarder he hooked left with 5:28 left in the game and the Bengals, down 11, trying to make it a one-score game.

?The wind kind of grabbed it,? Pettrey said. ?My fault. I should have aimed it a little more outside the right upright instead of right middle. That?s what happens when you deal with the environment.?

Pettrey, the Ohio State product and Kentucky native, has grown up in the environment and brought plenty of Bengals fans with him. And, yes, he was nervous.

?Oh yeah,? Pettrey said. ?I think I used my nerves in the right way instead of letting them take over and getting scared.?

He?s got his first six NFL points, but he doesn?t know if he?ll get a chance Thursday for his seventh in Jersey as the Bengals mull their kicking vacancy left by the knee injury to Mike Nugent.

?I could be here tomorrow and gone Tuesday,? Pettrey said. ?All I know is I?m going to do whatever I can to help this team get a win.?

Help wanted: Reliable placekicker
Bengals notebook
By Joe Reedy ? [email protected] ? November 26, 2010

CINCINNATI By the time the Bengals host New Orleans on Dec. 5, it is quite possible that they could have a new kicker.

After Aaron Pettrey went 1 for 2 in Thursday night?s 26-10 loss to the Jets, coach Marvin Lewis said on Friday that they will review their options.

Pettrey, who was signed on Nov. 16 after a knee injury ended Mike Nugent?s season, was wide left from 27 yards before making one from 28 early in the fourth quarter.

Kickoffs were supposed to be the rookie?s strength, but the deepest one on Thursday went to the Jets 8.

?We need to be better in that phase, no question,? Lewis said. ?We?ve been working on it internally all the way along, but it continues to hurt us.?

In two games, Pettrey is 2 of 4 on field goals. In seven kickoffs, he has one for a touchback, but on the other six the average landing spot has been the opponents 10.

Pettrey on thin ice?

Former Ohio State and Raceland High kicker Aaron Pettrey may not be with the Cincinnati Bengals a week from today against the New Orleans Saints.

Pettrey missed a 27-yard field goal against the Jets on Thursday night that could have tied the game at 10-10.

In his two games since taking over for the injured Mike Nugent, Pettrey has been good on field goals from 19 and 28 yards and wide left from 43 and 27.

"We need to be better in that phase, no question," said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis in a press conference Friday. "We've been working on it internally all the way along. It continues to hurt us."

Pettrey made a 28-yarder later to cut the lead to 17-10 Thursday against the Jets, but he only got the ensuing kickoff to the Jets 11 and Brad Smith took it on the dead run for the game-breaking 89-yard kick return.

His kickoffs haven't been as deep as hoped, with only one touchback in seven kickoffs.

In his NFL debut Sunday, Pettrey made a 19-yarder and yanked a 43-yarder left when he said he didn't play the wind correctly.

"No wind," Pettrey said of Thursday's miss. "I just didn't bring my leg around."

The Bengals are talking with Kris Brown, who was cut loose by the Chargers this week. He kicked while Nate Kaeding was on the mend in San Diego. Brown has a lot of NFL experience, being a kicker for the Steelers and the past three seasons for the Texans. He has a career 77 percentage and made four of five field goals, the longest from 36 yards, for the Chargers.
