K Aaron Pettrey (Las Vegas Locos - UFL)

I was impressed with the tone Jim Tressel set when discussing the block that injured Aaron Pettrey.

Yes, it should have been a penalty, no question. Yes, it's a shame it ended Pettrey's season. But plenty of legal hits end players' seasons, as well.

I liked that Tressel immediately mentioned how sorry the New Mexico State player was (Marcus Anderson), how he apologized and was obviously distraught. The block did not occur 20 yards from the play, Pettrey was actually moving up toward the return man and was reasonably close to the action when he got hit.

The message here is forgive and forget, move on. I couldn't agree more. Turn the other cheek.

I know Pettrey a little bit. He's a man of faith, and I guarantee you that if he felt any bitterness toward Anderson, it was a fleeting thought, at most. He's not harboring any deep resentment, and neither should anyone else.

Pettrey back for Rose Bowl? Speaking of returning from injury, Ohio State senior kicker Aaron Pettrey is hopeful for Pasadena after tearing ligaments in his knee against New Mexico State on Oct. 31.

"I'm making great progress," Pettrey said. "The next two weeks, if I do well, then I expect to be out there."

Pettrey said he probably wouldn't kick off but would handle the field goals. Pettrey was 13-of-19 this season. Backup Devin Barclay is 4-of-7, including the game-winner in overtime to beat Iowa.

The pain is gone, but the anguish remains for Aaron Pettrey, something the Ohio State kicker wants to relieve before his senior season is over...

Ahead of schedule

Senior kicker Aaron Pettrey could be cleared to start practicing with the team as early as today, sources said, which means he could play in the Rose Bowl.

Pettrey suffered an injury to his right knee, in his kicking leg, in October and underwent surgery. Devin Barclay assumed Pettrey's job and kicked the winning field goal against Iowa, which clinched Ohio State's spot in the Rose Bowl.

Pettrey was considered a long shot to return for the bowl game, but he said two weeks ago that his knee was doing well, and since then, he has been kicking on the side during practice.

Even if Pettrey is allowed to kick against Oregon, Barclay is expected to handle kickoffs. Pettrey was injured on a kickoff play when a New Mexico State player hit him below the waist.

Ohio State notebook: Pettrey punctuates his career

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

PASADENA, Calif. -- First, he vowed to come back. Aaron Pettrey told his Ohio State teammates he would recover from knee surgery in time to play in the Rose Bowl.

Then, he promised them he'd make an important kick in last night's Rose Bowl.

OSU had just scored a touchdown and led Oregon 25-17 midway through the fourth quarter.

As if he needed any more pressure, Pettrey then had to put up with members of the extra-point team reminding him that he could score the point that would make it a two-score game.

"The whole (offensive) line was talking about it: 'This is for a nine-point lead,' " Pettrey said. "I said, 'I'll make it.' "

He did make it, along with an earlier extra point and a 45-yard field goal that contributed to a 26-17 victory.

The game was meaningful for Pettrey, who had not played since he suffered a torn knee ligament Oct. 24. As a senior, he worked hard to get back for one final career appearance.

"My parents told me just last week that the doctor said after the surgery there's no way I'd be back for the bowl game," Pettrey said. "But he didn't tell me that. I told everybody I'd be back, that I had one more game."

The plan going into the game was for Devin Barclay to handle kickoffs and field-goal attempts shorter than 40 yards, with Pettrey handling longer kicks.

Barclay booted three field goals, and Pettrey was good on his only field-goal try, which gave OSU a 16-10 lead heading into halftime.

"It was basically a perfect ending (to my career)," he said. "I couldn't ask for anything else."

I felt very badly for Aaron Pettrey when he was injured in a meaningless game. I really wanted him to get a FG in a top game and have that feeling of contribution and completion. I was surprised he played and am delighted that he got to make that contribution. A really good Buckeye player who deserved the recognition he got from everyone around him yesterday.
