The work Ohio State kicker Aaron Pettrey put in to return from knee surgery in time to play in the Rose Bowl paid off in another way: He was one of three Buckeyes on the initial list of more than 250 players invited to the NFL combine.

The invitation seems especially significant because there is only one other place-kicker on the list -- Alabama's Van Tiffin. Whether Pettrey would have been invited if he hadn't kicked a 45-yard field goal against Oregon is open to debate.

Underclassmen and some seniors will be added to the combine list later, partly because the deadline for juniors declaring for the draft isn't until today.

Nation squad displays skills in rain, wind for all-star matchup

Nation squad

At the end of the Nation practice, Ohio State kicker Aaron Pettrey got a chance to show his stuff by kicking field goals as long as 47 yards. He was true from that distance, with plenty of room to spare -- and the wind at his back. He tore a knee ligament covering a kick against New Mexico during the 2009 season, but scouts know he's one of the top two kicking prospects because he consistently hits down on ball, getting high trajectory with the leg strength to kick off and connect on 50-plus field goals.

There's a reason our special teams struggled down the stretch. It makes a big difference when kickoff coverage teams get that extra .2-.3 seconds while the ball is in the air, or if its just kicked through the back of the end-zone. With lots of NFL teams going to a two kicker philosophy (fg kicker, kickoff specialist) I hope Aaron gets a look.

OSU kickers Pettrey, Nugent hope to put their best foot forward in chasing NFL openings
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
February 17, 2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Ohio State defensive linemen Doug Worthington and Thaddeus Gibson were perfecting an agility drill with OSU strength and conditioning coach Eric Lichter on Tuesday. They were two of the dozen or so Buckeyes striving for every little edge in speed and strength while preparing to work out for NFL teams.

Not Aaron Pettrey. Though he's one of four Buckeyes -- along with Worthington, Gibson and safety Kurt Coleman -- invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis next week, Ohio State's former kicker isn't worried about tenths of seconds.

"This isn't for me," Pettrey said, watching his former teammates sweat. "I don't think [NFL people] care if you're an athlete. If you make field goals and hit kickoffs, they'll take you."

Getting his kicks

Kicker Aaron Pettrey is one of a chosen few kickers who will participate in the NFL combine.

Coming off knee surgery that sidelined him the last four games of the regular season, Pettrey said he feels “great,” and that his experience in the Texas-versus-USA college football all-star game has given him more confidence heading into the combine.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “To have a chance of being drafted. ... and there are only two other guys who are going to be there.”

Pettrey said the kicking portion of the NFL Combine isn’t anywhere near as regimented as that of position players. He explained that kickers will kick 15 field goals from 30-to-50 yards from various positions on the field, as well as nine kickoffs to specific positionings.

“I think (other drills) are optional for us,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t thnk they want to see us lift 225 pounds twice.

“They already told me to bring all the X-Rays from my knee, all the MRIs, everything. They’ll twist my knee every way they can, but it’s OK. I’m healthy.”

Long day for Pettrey

Because he is coming off knee surgery in November, former Ohio State kicker Aaron Pettrey endured more than nine hours of medical scrutin today, beginning at 6 a.m.

By 3:30 p.m., when he met with reporters, he looked haggard and disheveled.

?This has been horrible, going through all this medical stuff,? he said. ?We were doing physicals all day _ they were twisting (the knee), jerking it, making sure Dr. (Chris) Kaeding (who performed the surgery) did a good job. And then I just got done with an MRI, so. . . .long day.?

The good news for Pettrey is that the medical ordeal apparently was worthwhile. He said the NFL doctors seemed pleased with his knee.

He is one of just three kickers at the combine, along with Leigh Tiffin of Alabama and Brett Swenson of Michigan State. He is projected to be a possible end-of-the-draft pick.

Next up is Pettrey's kicking workout Friday: Fifteen field goals or various distances, then nine kickoffs.

?Yeah, I think the hardest part is over," he said. "Just got to go hit the ball now.?

Ohio State's Aaron Pettrey has not talked with the Bengals yet, but he grew up in Raceland, Ky., and his dad is a big fan.

INDIANAPOLIS - When the Bengals signed kicker Dave Rayner, it became virtually certain that the team would part ways with Shayne Graham.

So it is not out of the realm of possibility that they will bring in another kicker to compete for the job, or even draft one.

Two kickers in the draft to watch are Alabama's Leigh Tiffin and Ohio State's Aaron Pettrey.

Pettrey returned from midseason surgery on his right knee to kick in the Rose Bowl. The knee, where the MCL was completely torn, checked out fine after nine hours of tests on Thursday.

Although Pettrey has been inconsistent on long field goals, he is a little better on kickoffs. That might give him a slight edge.

"If you can kick off, a team is going to bring you in," Pettrey said.

"I know they signed Rayner but if they want to pick me up and battle, that would be great," he said.

Kicker Aaron Pettrey said he felt a "little bit of a letdown" after he connected on 10 of 15 field-goal tries in drills Friday. He said he missed from 35 yards, twice from 40 when he hit the uprights both times and also from 45 and 50.

Pettrey said he felt better about his kickoffs, putting three of nine into the end zone and several others nearly that far.

"I didn't have a terrible day, it was average," Pettrey said. "But I expected to do better."

Three kickers were invited. Pettrey said Michigan State's Brett Swenson made 13 of 15 field-goal attempts, while top-rated Leigh Tiffin of Alabama made 9 of 15.

Pettrey, 6-feet-2 and 199 pounds, converted 14 of 20 field goals as a senior last season for the Buckeyes. He signed with Carolina as an undrafted rookie free agent in April and was waived last week.

Pettrey was 29-for-39 on field-goal attempts over four seasons. He converted a 54-yarder as a junior against Youngstown State, the fourth-longest at Ohio Stadium.

Pettrey likely will not be expected to compete with longtime veteran Jason Hanson for the starting job. But he will share the workload in training camp. The Lions cut kicker and punter Justin Medlock this week, but general manager Martin Mayhew said last week that a second kicker would help Hanson in training camp.

?I think it?s important, though, to have enough guys to do all the work,? Mayhew said. ?Historically, since Jason?s been here and since I?ve been here the last 10 years, we?ve always had another leg (in training camp). And he?s probably used to that, his body?s probably used to that. So I wouldn?t rule out not bringing another guy in, but I?d be leaning toward bringing another guy in.?

The Lions announced before Tuesday's practice Hanson would undergo "minor" arthroscopic surgery on his left, non-kicking knee Tuesday night.

"The MRI showed a little bit of cartilage, similar to last year (when he had his kicking leg scoped)," Schwartz said. "The difference is, last year it occurred deeper in training camp and this is real early. We never put timetables on injuries but we don't anticipate it jeopardizing the start of the season."

Hanson had the knee on his right leg scoped Aug. 18 last year and was ready for Game 1.

In the meantime, Aaron Pettrey, a rookie from Ohio State, will handle the placekicking.

"All I wanted was to come in and learn from Jason and get some good film," he said. "Now I'm getting an opportunity."

Pettrey is coming off MCL surgery himself, which limited his senior season at Ohio State to the final four games and the bowl game.

How many more kicks does 40-year-old Jason Hanson have left? Hanson, the longest-tenured Lion, had minor arthroscopic surgery on his left (non-kicking) knee this week. Rookie Aaron Pettrey from Ohio State will handle kicking duties in Hanson's absence. Hanson, who had a similar procedure on his right knee last August, is expected back before the regular season.
