  • Well folks I just received a RIF (reduction in force) document. I should be okay but there are several people who just got plain "blindsided." The actual announcement was handled very poorly as the guy in charge had everyone in the office or on the phone for a 90 minute "town hall." After going through the goals for the next year he announces at the end of the meeting the RIF. But only they don't release the names....and they had no process in place to let you know that you were on the list or not.

So basically we had to wait 24 hours for someone to call you between the hours or 7-12 noon to tell you that you were [Mark May]canned...
They called everybody regardless if you were being canned or not...then it was yes you are being let go, here is your outgoing separation package and have a nice day...
My guy knew me so his voice was cracking and it was probably harder for him then me. However a buddy of mine got his call, knew the guy calling and the guy treated him like a complete stranger and he was off the phone in less than 60 seconds...

I am in the consulting biz. Took a flyer with this company and it just didn't work out. I saw this coming so I started feeling the market out. Good news I have two interviews already scheduled and another guy I know left me a voice mail while I was flying back home. I don't think I will be unemployed long.
I feel really bad for some of the support staff. They let go four women who all are in their late 50's or early 60's. I wasn't in the office (as I was at a client site) but my understanding was that each of the ladies were devastated. They obviously needed the money and they worked hard for what they were paid but we fire them instead of the bosses' drinking buddy. I still remember presenting our receptionist (who was let go) a floral arrangement for Christmas and you would have thought I gave her a million dollars.....

It's pretty prevalent with the economy, but when it happens to one close to you.....sorry about that. You might want to try some of the companies you were consulting for, if you've done some great thing for them, then maybe they'd like you full time? If you're an internal consultant, look for same industry and market yourself as a 'fixer'. Sounds like you've developed some skills, and are empathetic with people, so you'll do fine.

Key is to not get down on yourself. We've all been there, and will be again. Approach it like a job, do letters, networking, phone calls, and then take some time for yourself. Great time to work on personal goals - get the handicap down, lose those ten pounds from Christmas, do the double black diamonds without doing a face-plant. The lift lines and tee times are shorter during the week. You will be all-too-soon back in harness and pulling the wagon again. And then you'll say ---darn----I had all this time and squandered it.

PS, stay away from Oprah and all of the stupid TV during the day. that'll curdle your brain.
