Journey-Pre Steve Perry

I highly recommend. Check out all their albums before their Infinity release (1978). Totally rocking!!!

Wonder which ones you prefer the most, with Rolie or Fleischman on vocals?

The cool thing about Journey over the years is that, is great as Steve Perry was, the band itself was always more about the "music" than the "vocals." Neil Schon is probably the greatest guitar player ever thats never come up in a "greatest guitar player ever" conversation. Loved when they took Jonathan Cain from the Baby's. Ross Valory has been around forever and going from Dunbar to Smith to Castronova indicates no decline.

Love these guys and 30 years after I first saw them, still still are going strong!

Peace

Us younger folks that listen to Journey (the popular stuff...at least) obviously don't have the same sort of take on the band as others...but I find that Arnel Pineda and Steve Perry are practically interchangeable.

Saw them recently with Arnel on tour...one of the greatest concerts of my life...

You would like the popular stuff.

Steve Perry is not interchangeable with anyone. Arnel Pineda is a Journey-cover-band-Steve-Perry-karaoke-wannabe-doucher. :tic:

Pineda could never pen a gem such as "Oh Sherrie," let alone hit half the notes in it.

Well, nobody suggested that they were interchangeable creatively...but vocally you'd he be hard pressed to hear the difference between the two if you didn't SEE one of them singing. I've witnessed THAT phenomenon firsthand with folks that have been to Journey concerts WITH Perry.

The rest of the band wouldn't have chosen him if they didn't feel like he carried the spirit of the band...so the "Journey-cover-band-Steve-Perry-karaoke-wannabe-doucher" quip is more of a bash on the character of the rest of the Journey members than it is on Pineda.

Similar to Van Halen pre/post Hagar, Pineda is a more marketable version of an extremely similar product.

:slappy:

The other band members didn't choose Pineda because he carries on the "spirit of the band," they chose him because he sounded exactly like Steve Perry from some of Pineda's YouTube videos.

Journey with a guy that sounds like Steve Perry = more concert-goers than Journey with a guy that does not sound like Steve Perry. More money for everybody!

I'd like to think it goes both ways...they chose him because he sounded like Steve AND he felt good for the band...there are a few interviews with Neal Schon on the Revelation DVD where he talks about how quickly Pineda caught on to the whole touring thing and took on the "role" of Journey frontman.

Journey with a guy that sounds like Steve Perry but doesn't feel like Journey = fewer concert-goers than Journey with a guy that sounds like Steve Perry and DOES feel like Journey.
