John McCallister: The Difference between Talent Evaluators and "Recruiting Experts"

Often times the top kids in the class are not the ones that many of us might think until a few years later when we are talking about 3 star guys looking impressive. These guys just sit back and smile. Of course the same could be said for 5 star "busts". It's sad the expectations we put on some of these kids becasue some internet guys put a label on them.

Great point. I've had conversations with someone who did something similar to McCallister for many years (those who post on Scout probably know who; he has been unfairly castigated by the masses on there.)

The 5 -Star Service Guys aren't always the 5- Star guys when being rated by people who do in-depth evaluations. There were a number of highly ranked service guys from this person's state who he told me were skating by on reputation alone. Lo and behold, these kids have not been impact players in college.

It also works in converse with "sleepers" like Malcolm Jenkins. Does anyone really believe Malcolm was not a great talent in high school? He competed immediately at Ohio State. That isn't a sleeper...it's someone that the services missed.

I don't post on or read Scout, but the only guy I can think of off hand who did (and I think still does) what McCallister does is former Canton McKinley HC and Notre Dame assistant Terry Forbes.

I'm not a fan at the shots he is taking at others in his post, though. If you are so worried about poor player evaluations being "out there", then perhaps you should correct them with your opinion. If not, just be quiet about it. Taking personal potshots at others over the Internet is hardly admirable, especially when they are not there to defend themselves.

Crable's career was littered with misses, making it pretty hard to label it otherwise.

He didn't miss on this one!

I actually think he's criticizing their methods, not their personalities, but it sounds like those guys are pretty much only on the internet, so they can defend themselves in the same way he offers his critiques--on blogs.

Well, getting into a catfight on these guy's sites is hardly the way to go, and if McCallister called them up to say he thought they were wrong, well, what would that do. I will say that I met John once, and his opinion on one of the individuals mentioned was exactly the same 3 years ago as it was posted on the blog. Personally, I agree w/ what he says about the evaluation process-and these individuals roles in it, but, honestly, people don't go to scout for evaluation, they(and myself) go for a place to talk and get recruiting rumors.

If the "frito bandito" is who I think it is, I'm pretty certain that McCallister is criticizing his personality as well as his methods. I'll buy your analysis with regards to the other three, though.

Mr. McCallister hates that the recruiting world is evolving as the information available multiplies by the day.

I don't need to travel to California to see a kid in person when I can watch a 5 minute highlight film online and figure out if he is worth requesting game film. The highlight shows me the non-coached movements and explosion I want to see...the gamefilm reveals the level of 'ugly' every player possesses. If the film looks right, I have a variety of methods for the 'eyeball' test...
