John McCallister: The Difference between Talent Evaluators and "Recruiting Experts"

McCallister comes off as a bitter, old, semi-literate, self-loathing, over inflated self worth, dork.

To quote Rodney Dangerfield, he must of been something before electricity.

A little harsh don't ya think?

McCallister is still a darn good talent evaluator, he's just a little upset that the recruting/evaluation game is passing him by.

If you find yourself to be a Buckeye fan, then you should understand that JM cares about kids and honest evaluations. And the staff respects his opinion tremendously. I've seen it first hand and I was pretty amazed. When this guy walks in to the WHF, the coaches and a lot of the players respect him, so I would think Ohio State fans would as well.

Taking a few quotes from him might make him sound bitter, but he simply hates how the recruiting "insiders" play these kids. Should he call these guys out? I'm not sure, but I do know why he is doing it. He know's who is honest, and who is milking these kids like it's a Nike basketball camp. I struggle myself with this issue. I pay for subscriptions, but I can hardly stomach some of the garbage that goes on behind the scenes.

And nobody will outwork this guy. He drives around the state to watch thse kids play football, basketball, track, wrestling, etc. He watches their interactions with others and their coaches. His evalustions are so much more than just a highlight tape with some emails and phone calls.

When you only have 85 scholarships you need as much info as you can gather. John will do that for schools, and that is why coaches not only across the midwest, but throughout the country want to know his opinion on Ohio kids.

Anybody want to guess who insisted that Troy Smith needed an offer why the "insiders" loved Justin Zwick? What about those who thought Kirk Barton was just a 2 star TE?

You can believe that each guy on this staff wants to hear what John has to say on each and every kid. From Braxton Miller down to the kid we will offer next week that most of us (and most schools outside of Ohio) have never heard of up to this point in time.

I wouldn't be surprised if McCallister had a hand in stoking the interest of the staff in Derjuan Gambrell. McCallister really likes him.

Exactly. Do you think any of the "experts" McCallister was referring to can walk into Jim Tressel's office and not be met with JT frantically pushing the trapdoor button under his desk?

The staff respects his opinion. I wonder how often the staff sits around in meetings and contemplates what scout's insiders think. I'm guessing never.

Mr. McCallister hates that the recruiting world is evolving as the information available multiplies by the day.

I don't need to travel to California to see a kid in person when I can watch a 5 minute highlight film online and figure out if he is worth requesting game film. The highlight shows me the non-coached movements and explosion I want to see...the gamefilm reveals the level of 'ugly' every player possesses. If the film looks right, I have a variety of methods for the 'eyeball' test...

I don't think he's asking guys in Ohio to travel to California. I think he's wondering why guys won't even travel within their own state.
