Sad to see Groce go because he's one of the top five assistant coach in hoops. At first I was surprised he took this job after turning down jobs like Butler last year that would arguably be better positions. I thought he would stay here until a Creighton, Dayton, Xavier, Southern Illinois caliber non-BCS job came open.
He walks into a good situation at OU. Tim O'Shea didn't leave the program in total shambles and he's got some pieces like Jerome Tillman. The Convo is probably the best basketball facility in the MAC. The MAC is in somewhat of state of flux as far it's power vacuum. Charlie Coles is probably done this year at Miami, Kent's string of successful coaching sucessions could be broken with Geno Ford (Who was the PG on the Gary Trent Bobcat teams) and the conference is probably at weakest state in years. Things are ripe for him to come and in build a team to dominate the MAC.
I guarantee you the number one reason he took this job is Ohio AD Jim Schaus. As John Calipari likes to say and I think this true and underated maxim in college sports, "coaches win games, adminstrations win championships."Schaus is one of the upcoming and AD's in the country. He did a great job at Wichita State. When hired Gregg Marshall from Winthrop to take over for Mark Tuergon that was one of the best hires of the last several years and probably the best non-BCS hire.
I'm sure Schaus and Groce will be at BCS programs in short order.
