The guy may be a "good person" in that he's loyal to friends and loves his family, but he's hardly worthy of real admiration. fourteenandoh says Daly's losing his entire $1 mil WGC purse in one of night of gambling is no big deal. Uh, yeah it is. fourteenandoh also claims that Daly makes up for that in speaking fees, etc. Well, just how long is that going to last...not to mention that the money from speaking is just as vulnerable to his gambling habits as is his other money.

Having a gambling problem is bad. Being an alcoholic is bad. Being both is just a recipe for life-long train wreck.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- John Daly has been cut loose by swing coach Butch Harmon, who said yesterday that he was not going to waste his time with a two-time major champion who is more interested in drinking than working on his golf game.
"My whole goal for him was he's got to show me golf is the most important thing in his life," Harmon said from his golf school in Las Vegas. "And the most important thing in his life is getting drunk."

Why is it a big deal? Because YOU place a high value on money? Why the fuck does he have to be rich? So long as the guy can pay his bills, then what the fuck does it matter to anyone else how and where he spends his money. He earned it, and should be allowed to enjoy it any fucking way he chooses.

He can. But in a world with lots of children not having food or medical care or a place to sleep, pissing away one million dollars in a night of gambling is fucking stupid. There is a John Daly Charity Foundation. I'm sure they loved the opportunity to see the one mil go down the Steve Wynn rabbit hole.

He can do what he wants. He can leave his two kids without a house or a way to pay for college. It is not about placing a high value on money for the sake of fucking money. Its how many people could you have helped with it, versus some fun while you were drunk one evening? It's his money, he can do what he wants. But if he squanders it, people can call him a dick all they want. That is their right.

A tad late with the reply, aren't we Sparky? :roll1:

No one is saying that he has to be rich, but rather that anyone who comes into possession of that much money, which could set himself and his family for life, and then turns around and just pisses it all away deserves ridicule. While he himself may have "earned" that money, it does not change the fact to gambling it all away in one night is complete waste. Ever hear of the word "responsibility?" While you may think it's OK for him to literally throw away more money than virtually anyone one of us here will make in a decade, I think it's OK to call it a fucking stupid as it is.

Heard yesterday that Daly took an 18 on a par 5 at Bay Hill this week. :slappy: :slappy:

I think you heard it wrong. He couldn't have gotten a 18 on a par 5 since they kicked him out of the tournament Wedneday.

Daly disqualified after missing Bay Hill pro-am

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? John Daly woke up Wednesday morning to read that swing coach Butch Harmon fired him. Then he got a phone call when he was at the entrance to Bay Hill letting him know he had been kicked out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational for missing the pro-am.
"Hasn't been a good day," Daly told The Associated Press. "This is the last thing I needed in my life. I feel like I let Arnold down."
The wild ride of golf's most unpredictable figure took another hairpin turn when Daly said he was given wrong information that caused him to miss his tee time, starting a bizarre chain reaction that knocked out two other players from the tournament.
The tour has a policy that anyone missing the pro-am is ineligible to play in the tournament.
Daly, who received a sponsor's exemption, played a Monday pro-am at Bay Hill and said he was asked to play the Wednesday pro-am, too. He requested a morning start, then called Tuesday to find out his tee time. A woman in the tournament office told him 9:47 a.m., which instead was his starting time for the first round.
"I didn't even know that was my Thursday tee time," Daly said. "I should have looked into it. It stinks for me. I want to do anything I can for the tournament as a sponsor exemption. I wanted to meet the people I was playing with in the pro-am. I love Arnold Palmer to death. I called and talked to him and apologized.

Apparently the 18 on the par five 6th hole at Bay Hill did happen, but not his year:

Re: I'll also be watching the sixth hole, the monster par 5 that curves left around a lake. John Daly once made a Tin Cuppish 18 there.

Why is it a big deal? Because YOU place a high value on scoring low? Why the fuck does he have to be accurate? So long as the guy can hit his greens eventually, then what the fuck does it matter to anyone else how many balls he hits? He paid the greens fee, and should be allowed to hit it as many fucking times as he chooses.

Yeah I am a tad late, chuckles. Just saw the thread.

Deserves ridicule? If he deserves ridicule for doing what he wants with his money, then you deserve ridicule for not making as much as him and setting a good example for him to follow.

You said that he may be a good person in that he loves/is loved by his family and friends, but he's a dickhead because he blows money. In the grand scheme, money isn't shit.

I never claimed it was smart.

There is a John Daly Charity Foundation. I'm sure they loved the opportunity to see the one mil go down the Steve Wynn rabbit hole.
He started a fucking charity! They wouldn't even fucking exist in the first place if not for him. Now I'm supposed to give a fuck what THEY think of him gambling?

He can do what he wants. He can leave his two kids without a house or a way to pay for college.
You're damn right he can. His kids can earn their own way through life.

You only live once. He has helped people, I assume, as evidenced by his charity being in existence. He has the right to fucking live it up, same as everyone else has the right to call him a dick. I just think it's funny to rip a guy because he spends money on something he wants to. Jay Leno bought a thousand cars. Imagine all the people he could've helped with that money.

Steve Wynn also has a foundation, and I'll bet it has a lot more money than John Daly's.

People can call anyone a dick, whether or not they have money. This discussion isn't exclusive in that regard. :wink2:

Cracks me up how some people spend so much time and energy telling others what they should do with their money. Do I think Daly has pissed away a lot in his life? Sure, but it's none of my business.

That was last year.
