:slappy:

Let's keep this in perspective. The only reason that is news is because we (OSU) are relevant and huge in the college football world. If we were Western Who gives a sh*t Uuniversity nobody would care.

Buckeyes' coach proves his worth

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS After the lowest point of Ohio State?s season ? a 28-21 loss to Illinois on Nov. 10 ? E. Gordon Gee was listening to something he rarely hears.

Gee tuned in to local sports radio, ready to hear fans gripe about Head Coach Jim Tressel. That usually happens when any major college football program loses, especially after an upset at home.

But Gee listened and learned.

?No one after the Illinois game was ready to throw him overboard,? said Gee, Ohio State?s president. ?They realize how fortunate we are to have him.?

Tressel is the rare college football coach. He is taking Ohio State to its second straight BCS National Championship Game and third in six years. He beat Michigan five times in six games. His predecessor, John Cooper, won twice in 12 tries.

When Tressel makes a recruiting visit, he often is a distraction. When he?s at a banquet, he?s kissing more babies and shaking more hands than a politician.

?You hate to call someone perfect, but he signs every autograph. When he does public speaking, he?s as good as there is,? OSU co-captain Kirk Barton said. ?People try to nitpick and find something wrong with him. He?s the best coach in the country as far as I?m concerned.

?He?s Elvis in Ohio. When he walks in the door, everybody wants his autograph, a photo and ?kiss my kid.? He handles it. ... I hate asking him for anything, because he?s done so much for me.?

Send something to Tressel?s office to be signed, and it eventually will make its way back to the sender with his signature and ?Yea, Ohio!?

Ohio State football
Tressel reportedly breaks NCAA rule

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

What was meant as a reward for academic excellence for a couple of outgoing Ohio State players in the spring wound up being what appears to be a secondary NCAA rules violation by coach Jim Tressel.

Tressel arranged for Anthony Gonzalez and Stan White Jr., both academic All-Americans, to come on the same private plane to the Final Four in Atlanta, and they sat near each other in the first row in the Georgia Dome.
One of those who saw them was OSU director of NCAA rules compliance Doug Archie, according to yesterday's Plain Dealer of Cleveland. Archie reported the trip to the NCAA as a secondary rules violation, because he also ruled it was used to "cultivate the relationship of future and current donors."

As most other schools worry about the success of their university, then worry that their coach will leave after he has success...I offer the follwoing quotes to show just how damned lucky we are...

Tressel has changed the culture of OSU?s program. Smith has noticed. The team?s grade-point average is above 3.0, which triggers another bonus that Tressel donates back to the university.

Tressel isn?t college football?s highest-paid coach, but he may the most valuable.

?(His value) is incalculable,? Gee said. ?He?s such a great spokesman for the university. He bleeds scarlet and gray. Someone asked me if I was afraid Jim Tressel was going to go to another program. No. Jim Tressel is Ohio State. He has proven his commitment to this institution. In doing so, he carries a great message about this university in terms of value, in terms of direction, in terms of opportunity.

?He is an example of what?s right with the college coaching rather than what?s wrong. He is loyal, committed and values the institution, and the institution values him back.?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Calling it "old news," Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said yesterday the NCAA did not penalize the school for a minor NCAA rules violation committed by coach Jim Tressel. OSU rules compliance director Doug Archie reported to the NCAA soon after the incident last spring.
The report became public in Saturday's Plain Dealer of Cleveland. Tressel arranged for receiver Anthony Gonzalez and fullback Stan White Jr. to join him and others on a private jet flight to Atlanta to watch Ohio State beat Georgetown in a men's basketball national semifinal.

Just curious, does anyone know when in a former player's life his former coach can take him out to dinner and pick up the tab without it being a NCAA violation? i.e. When does a player that has already played in his last college game cease to be under NCAA rules?
