Folks wandering the hallways near the weight room inside Washington High shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday were treated to a surprise guest in the person of Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel.
Tressel, attired in a gray sportcoat over ? yes ? a red sweater-vest, hit Washington High as part of a recruiting swing through the area. McKinley was also included among the stops for the Buckeye head coach.

Tressel: Team lost momentum, sharpness
Tuesday, February 27, 2007

By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON TWP. As usual, a capacity crowd at Four Winds restaurant greeted Jim Tressel. But this wasn?t the usual circumstances the Ohio State head football coach meets with the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club.

Tressel, an old friend to the club who has visited 22 straight years, entered the building having lost the last game he coached, the national championship. And his team lost it big.

Still, he was among friends. Tressel received a standing ovation ? twice ? and seemed at home with his audience. Speaking in Canton, one of his first speaking appearances in Ohio since the Buckeyes lost Jan. 8, was a lot easier than the speech he gave two days after losing to Florida 41-14.

The Review
CANTON TWP. -- On the fourth Monday in February, Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel was in a reflective mood while addressing the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club.
The issue is what transpired seven Mondays earlier in Glendale Ariz., the site where the Buckeyes were outplayed and overwhelmed 41-14 by the Florida Gators in the National Championship Game on January 8.
"We weren't as good as we needed to be to beat Florida," stated Tressel. "We were ready to play ... for 12 seconds."
Tressel was referring to Ted Ginn's opening-game touchdown on a kickoff return to give Ohio State a short-lived 7-0 lead.

Tressel not all football in annual visit to Stark

Even after coming off one of the most embarrassing losses in recent Ohio State football history, head coach Jim Tressel still knows how to move a crowd.
Reverend Clark Simpson led off the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club ceremony Monday by telling a story about how his father rigged together a large antenna that could pick up Ohio State football games from their home in the Philippines. Since the Philippines is 13 hours ahead of the Eastern Time zone, Simpson?s father, and avid Ohio State fan, would tune in at 2:30 in the morning to catch the games.

Overall the article from the Canton paper wasn't bad, but I wish they would develop a long-term memory or at least check their facts. In 2003 we were coming off of a National Championship, but were not replacing our starting quarterback.

yeah i caught that too. but i do acknowledge that it makes for a far more relevant story when you discount sillly little things like facts. which, after all, have little merit in journalism anyway.

TRESSEL TEXTING: Ohio State coach Thad Matta is getting plenty of words of encouragement, in text messages from Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel.

?I don?t think he sleeps. He sends texts like at three in the morning,? Matta said Friday. ?He?s been great. ... It?s all focused on team and playing hard and trying to finish a mission, and it?s always good to get those and read and ponder them and take it and let the guys know kind of what he said.?

Tressel, who led the Buckeyes to a national football championship five years ago, even showed up unannounced one day and spoke to Matta?s team.

Tressel makes time to attend Final Four

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Wednesday, March 28, 2007
COLUMBUS ? The Ohio State football team begins spring practice Thursday, but coach Jim Tressel isn't letting that interfere with him cheering on the basketball-playing Buckeyes at the Final Four in Atlanta.
OSU will have a morning practice Saturday, giving Tressel time to make the 6 p.m. tipoff against Georgetown. The football team also is taking Monday off, and Tressel will return to the Georgia Dome if the Buckeyes advance.

tressel will be on mike & mike at 6:45.
I heard him on the way to work this morning. Quick paraphrased recap, just imagine Tressel-speak for the answers (I'll probably miss a few questions):

Q: How is Columbus right now?
A: Everyone is excited for the weekend, almost feels like Michigan Week. Proud of all the players... (mentioned some of the players giving special recognition to the seniors Lewis and Harris, as JT always does)

Q: Are you going to the game?
A: Definitely, have practice today and tomorrow morning, flying to Atlanta after that

Q: Relationship with Thad Matta and his staff?
A: Intimate relationship between staffs, talk often, call each other to discuss things. Dan Peters was the HC at Youngstown St. when I was the AD

Q: After seeing the excitement of the tournament do you think there will ever be some kind of playoff format in D-I football?
A: Complicated matter, decision makers have a tough job balancing a playoff-type atmosphere with the tradition of the bowls.

Q: Do you want to see them play Florida after what happened earlier this year?
A: First have to beat a great Georgetown team, UCLA is also a great program. Playing Florida would provide with many interesting story lines.

-----------

It was great listening to JT... he is genuinely excited about the basketball team and proud of their accomplishments.
