Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

I don't understand why this is coming as a surprise to people in the media. You don't hire someone with Tressel's resume' to sit in the replay booth forever.. and I don't think Tressel would take that job without thinking more could be in the future.
Yeah, I'd say people here fully expected this.

I'll love to hear all my friend's reactions to having this "sleazeball" be their head coach. Had to hear so much crap the last year. :shake:

The media and Buckeye haters less than one year ago:
"We're gonna destroy Ohio State football and Jim Tressel! Fuck yeah, wallow in your shame!"
Now:

  • Ohio State secured the best coach on the market, one of the other top-5 FBS coaches of the last decade.
  • High profile recruits are crawling over each other to join the Buckeyes.
  • Jim Tressel is interviewing to possibly be Peyton Manning's head coach.
Mission accomplished?

Tressel could be good fit in Indianapolis

Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel could make an interesting candidate for the Colts. (Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE)
[Jim Tressel calling for a timeout during his team's Sugar Bowl victory over Arkansas.]

With whispers that the Indianapolis Colts either want to -- or have already -- talked to Jim Tressel about their head coaching job making their rounds, one thing comes to mind:

Why not?

Tressel was forced out at Ohio State last May after 10 wildly successful years as the head coach in Columbus. Besides a cameo at Terrelle Pryor's pro day workout in August, he's since been spotted around football only at Colts games. He served as the team's replay assistant last season, a job some NFL teams use with the idea of having an outside, but experienced, football eye to sit with the coaching staff during games and provide advice on replay challenges and replay rules in the heat of the moment.

In this case, it seems like a job that was designed to allow Tressel to sit in an NFL press box all season -- observing, listening, envisioning.

Was it the tryout for the real tryout, happening now? We don't really know. We do know there are reasons the Colts would want Tressel -- and vice-versa.

There are reasons it could work.

Coach Tressel was always a little like Senator Tressel, a guy who knew which hands to shake and almost always chose his words wisely. The best NFL coaches portray themselves as the best NFL coaches -- and behind the scenes they hire the best assistants, draft good players, build and oversee schemes that allow those players to shine.

Tressel would know he'd have to hire a staff with NFL experience and guys who could work with the offensive pieces already in the Colts locker room, and he's been around the game's highest levels long enough to presumably know who some of those coaches might be.

Okay, my wife is eating crow today....

Months ago, when Coach Tress got the job in Indy, I told my wife, "You'd better watch out, this guy might be the next head coach..."

She didn't listen. Now it could come to fruition.

As much as I like Coach Tress, and would 110% understand and support the hire, I'd be more interested to see what kind of offensive staff he puts around Manning, seeing as he's known for his defensive prowess.

If he's named the head coach, I'd look for them to hire a young, up and coming hot offensive coordinator. Coach Tress is 59 (I believe) which would put him among the 'elder statesmen' in the league. He could be the bridge from Caldwell to the next long term coach as well.

It will be telling to see who they draft on draft day as well. I know Luck is the sexy pick right now, but RG3 is my #1 guy off the board.

What do you guys think?

Horrible idea for the Colts in my opinion.

1) First off, I know coaching is a close fraternity but does Tressel have the NFL ties to form a quality staff if hired?

2) Have the Colts not seen past history and its results of hiring college coaches?

I love coach Tressel but think the Colts are making a HUGE mistake if they hire him. Basically seems as if they are looking for a white, Tony Dungy.

I'm not sure how well JT would do as head coach of a bad Colts teams who may never get Manning back, but if he wants the job I hope he gets it and dominates the AFC.

If nothing else it will make the NFL more interesting.
