Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

They used to say about Bear Bryant that he could take his and beat yours, then take yours and beat his.
RR proved last year that he is the anti-Bear Bryant. Apparently he couldn't take Carr's guys and even beat Toledo. He can't win in the Big Ten unless he has all those three star recruits in place, I guess.

If RR gets credit for his years at WV, then why doesn't Paterno get credit for the other 1,000 years he has coached at PSU? Why doesn't Tressel get credit for 4 NCs at YSU? RR gets all the credit in the world for a pretty good record in an extremely weak conference.

I would love to have a job like Deinhart's where you can write about sports every day - but apparently in this day and age you have to flunk an IQ test and then demonstrate an utter lack of understanding about the game, in order to get hired.

Sometimes numbers don't tell the whole story. Other times, they tell you all you need to know.

I can think of about 35 reasons emphatically stated back in November why Jim Tressel is better than Master Shredder.

If you come in tenth place in your only season in the league, wouldn't that make you the tenth best coach in the league? And since the one school that came in worse than you has a new coach, isn't it conceivable that he's not even tenth best anymore?

By the way, where does Rodriguez rank among MAC coaches right now?

I'm curious where Ferentz would have been on that list last year this time. He got all that love (maybe some deservedly so at the time) from '02-'04, then fell off the map when the expectations increased. He rode a pretty weak schedule to a 9-4 record last year. Lets see what he does this year when he loses the biggest piece of his offense.

DickRod, well, my feelings on him are well known. Any coach worth their weight in spit could have done better than 3-9 at a place like tsun last year, yet he's better than a coach that has won FIVE National Championships and has dominated that very conference for the better part of a decade. Uh-huh.

Tressel guarding against entitlement with OSU
April 16, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Midway through an interview Thursday, Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel received a text message from former Buckeyes star James Laurinaitis.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel knows it's not the name that wins championships.

Laurinaitis, a standout hockey player in high school growing up in Minnesota, was looking for tickets to a Columbus Blue Jackets NHL playoff game next week. Tressel and Laurinaitis were supposed to attend a Jackets' game together several weeks ago, but Laurinaitis backed out at the last minute to attend a family function in Dayton.

"He threw me under the bus," Tressel joked. "Now they're in the playoffs, so now he wants to go. I'm going to ignore him for a couple hours."

Laurinaitis had to suffer for a while, but he'll probably get his wish from Tressel. After everything he gave to Ohio State during the last five seasons, the linebacker deserves it.

Tressel's current players don't share the same sense of entitlement as Laurinaitis.

Ohio State got a lot younger during the offseason, and the spring depth chart is filled with underclassmen. Though the Buckeyes have won or shared the last four Big Ten titles and maintain the same expectation for 2009, championships don't just magically appear by wearing scarlet and gray.

"If we've got a room full of guys that think, 'Well, that's what you do. You come to Ohio State and you're Big Ten champs,' if that's the reality in their mind, then we're going to have a problem," Tressel said. "Because it is hard. People that know just how hard it is are gone. Because they're the ones that traversed that mountain.

"It's our job to get guys to understand how difficult it's been. It's not, 'Wish upon a star and I'm entitled to that.' That's the fun of raising kids up, helping them understand that goals are wonderful, but the plan and the action taken toward those goals it what it's all about."

Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock has never seen a problem with work ethic during his tenure at Ohio State. But to hammer home the importance of going to work every year for a goal, he tells the defenders to simply look around.

"This year, it's easy," Heacock said. "You lose Malcolm [Jenkins] and you lose James [Laurinaitis] and you lose Marcus [Freeman], big production guys. You lose the key, main names that everybody has been hearing.

"And you end up with a group of guys, you had to use the clich?, no-names, but guys that don't have quite the reputation. This group is a very young group, but boy, they're energetic and they're anxious to learn."

Rivals.com College Football - Whispers: Ranking the nation's top coaches

13. Jim Tressel, Ohio State. Is he the best coach in Buckeyes history?

So, arguably the best coach in Ohio State history, which includes Paul Brown and Woody Hayes, is only the 13th best coach in football today. Do everyone a favor, Tom, and blow your head off.

Here are some other gems.

2. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma. No coach can match his four BCS title game appearances.

6. Mack Brown, Texas. To whom much is given, much is expected. And Brown has delivered.

10. Mark Richt, Georgia. His r?sum? only lacks a national title. And you know one is coming.
11. Rich Rodriguez, Michigan. Not only has he won big, RichRod has helped change the sport with his offense.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! KIRK FUCKING FERENTZ AT #5?!!!

Jim Tressel isn't even the best coach in Ohio?!

Wow...just...wow. So Ferentz is better because he wins some games with less talent? I thought part of being a college coach was bringing in talent. Fucking absurd.

I usually laugh them off too...but this one struck a cord for some reason. They give Ferentz credit for...eh, fuck it.
Yeah, they're ridiculous. Tow years ago, JT was always in the top-3 on these lists, and has seemingly been penalized due to the recent big-game woes. Strange that hasn't happened to Stoops...
