NYC and the surrounding area seems to have a lot of very good high school baskeball talent. Just look at the NY players Huggins has at WVU (his top four players was from NY/NJ etc). I sure hope not; however, I can see him getting some of the 2nd tier players and being competitive (i.e. middle of the pack in the Big East).

Do you guys seriously think O'Brien would be able to land the likes of Kevin Jones and Devin Ebanks (top-30 recruits) to Rutgers when he wasn't able to land guys like that at OSU? I don't think he could get those guys to Rutgers for one second.

Middle of the pack in the Big East (and/or Big Ten), sure, eventually that'll be a reasonable possibility. But his teams at Rutgers would almost certainly share 3 traits with his last few teams at OSU: 1) invariably getting their butts handed to them on the road against quality comp, 2) no NBA players, and 3) little to no NCAA tourney wins.

I was a fan of Obie's until near the very end.

What is interesting in his getting caught cheating is that he stayed away from the very kids whom you must normally cheat to get. He didn't like posses and he didn't like one-and-done's. He cheated to get players with little or no NBA potential. And he lost out on some really good Midwest kids who - IMHO - he couldn't relate to.

What he could do was coach Xs and Os basketball.

He might do quite well getting some East Coast kids to stay in the area and could well bring in the caliber of recruit he brought to OSU - which was NOT that high (even Redd IIRC was not a highly rated recruit).

Jim O'Brien returns in Division III

Emerson College, a NCAA Division III school in Boston, announced today it has hired former Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien as men's basketball coach.

O'Brien, 61, had been out of coaching since Ohio State fired him in 2004 for giving money to the family of a recruit. He has lived since then in Boston, where he coached at Boston College for 11 years before he was hired by Ohio State in 1997. He also was a star player at BC in the late 1960s.
