Jim Bollman (Stay calm and run Dave)

Food for thought. This needs to be brought out and dusted off every now and again.

Official NCAA Statistics:
Total Offense:
Year Rank
2011 108
2010 20
2009 68
2008 76
2007 62
2006 26
2005 32

2004 98
2003 93
2002 70
2001 65

2010 and 2006 Ohio State cracks the top 30 in total offense. Right now schools like Minny and Purdue are ahead of Ohio State offensively. Purdue is actually in the 40s right now. If Ohio State could somehow muster a 40th ranked offense they would be undefeated right now.
Y'all won 7 B1G titles with an average offensive ranking of 50 during those years. I think that supports your theory.

spent the last 3 days playing golf in Wisconsin (Whistling Straits...awesome !)

spent a lot of time with Badger fans.......they are really confident that they have arrived as the powerhouse in the B1G for the next 10 years or so. Why wouldn't they think that ? They have better coaching at every position on offense and at least decent to good on defense.

They were bragging about all the OL they put in the pros. Remember Bill Nagy ? Bollman didn't think he was good enough. Well, he's a starting OL in the NFL for the Cowboys.

He's just 1 example of many that the walrus has ignored

Fucky has one year with that QB and they'll be back to above average again. Take nothing away from Fucky this year, they look damn good thus far... But regression to _their_ mean will happen.

People (myself included) killed Herbstriet when he said if he had a son who was an offensive player he wouldn't send him to Ohio State, but if you look at those numbers objectively it's kind of hard to argue with him.
To include all the WRs tOSU has put in the NFL the past 10 years? Painting with such broad strokes is often foolish. No doubt the OL development has been subpar, but the offense has not been an abject failure.

As for Bollman, I think a lot of his deficiencies have been masked in the past by good-great QB play. The QB situation is a disaster this year and that will make a subpar gameplanner look even worse. I've never really thought tOSU has lived up to their FULL potential in the past on the offensive side of the ball (even when the O was very good), and I think a lot of that rests on Bollman. We'll get a fresh start next year, and I'm excited for it.

Playcalling wasn't out issue today guys. If you wanna point fingers, point it at the defense. Offense did it's job. Put us in a good position to win the game. Do I wish we would have stayed aggressive? Yeah. But 27 points or whatever we scored should have been enough to win.

It was funny when Matt Millen described how tOSU's offensive troubles weren't Bollman's fault because the QB and WR are so young and inexperienced. He then went on to say that it was the OL's fault that our offense isn't executing.

The days are numbered. But then again, why am I listening to Matt Millen!?!?!

I disagree. Other than the TE screen for a touchdown, it was the same predictable fare. It was masked for 2-1/2 quarters by a confident attitude from the players, physicality on the offensive line, playmaking by Miller, and an overall high rate of execution.

In many instances you can win in spite of predictability by executing at a high level. The problem is, if the execution isn't there at a high level, sometimes a little creativity and smart playcalling can mask the other deficiencies. This coaching staff does not seem to either be willing or capable of asserting themselves in that manner though.

Yeah, if you ignore the whole decision to put Joe in when Miller goes down. The offense absolutely stalled the rest of the way.

Of the few pass plays called, I watched carefully on a few of those. I still see Brax with a called roll-out and multiple fly patterns called! I just don't think Bollman knows how to integrate a half-field multiple pattern set for Brax to succeed in.

This is Cam Newton-level stuff, but I fail to see it called. Give me a spread look with 2 WR's or 1 TE. A short slant, and a deep post/comeback plus a mobile QB, esp. with our athletes, and you'll start to see some passing success. Ingenuity is what paved the way for the ol' Manifest Destiny. I hope Bollman knows what that word means.

How can you say that? Our O was firing well, as soon as Braxton went down Bollman went into panic mode. First off, no way should we have kept Bauserman out there. Secondly, we immediately started passing like mad instead of using Hyde and Berry and dominating Neb with our running game. Our coaches were not prepared at all for Joe playing, which is sad, you always have to have a gameplan for your backup. Our D can't be expected to play well when your offense goes 3 and out time after time after time after time. That being said, our D did a poor job adjusting some. Realse Bauserman is 3/24 passing in his 2 road games this season....

Still, this one is on the coaches, they screwed the pooch on this one.

Today's game told me how incompetent Bollman really is when it comes to dire situation playcalling. Instead of deciding to use what was working, he changed back to the predictable poo-flinger offense that lost us the Miami and the Sparty game.

Even when the offense was doing well I saw consistent and predictable "1st down = run down the middle" plays. That made me angry.

Maybe we should just start having the center hold a sign showing the play we're about to run.

I was amused that Motor-mouth Millen was stone silent immediately after the in-game promo for the Lions-Bears game.

True, and when Miller was in there I was hoping for some more play action or more shotgun on first down. Still they were actually quite successful and I would've much rather seen that than see Bauserman stop the clock 8 times and throw an INT.

There were some nice play calls early in the game, but there just isn't enough consistently seen out of these guys.

The point I was making is that Bolls works hard for his money and he doesn't just sit there with his thumb up his ass.

This is great. The results are not. Unfortunately, the results matter quite a bit. There are no excuses for the ineptitude we've seen from the offense this season, and there is really no excuse for the mediocrity of the offense over the last decade. Other than when we had superstars playing at QB and feeling rather comfortable in the system, the system always seemed (seems) shaky.

As someone else said, the defense is good enough to win titles if the offense can be around 50th best in the country. A team with as much talent as Ohio State shouldn't even be that low. Not even close.

I have respect for the man Jim Bollman. I wish him the best. It's just time to move on.
