Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

It seems to me like this whole "throwback" thing is just a bunch of bullshit that Nike used to get resistant teams to use alternate jerseys. If the pictures I have seen are real than they look nothing like the '54 jerseys.

I hope Ohio State tells Nike to go fuck themselves when they realize the jerseys are just alternates and have nothing to do with honoring the '54 team (since the jersey's appear to look nothing like the '54 ones).

Agreed. The '54 throwback would look really good, but I expect Nike to drop the ball on it. I'm just hoping that those were prototypes, though I get the feeling that the leaked picture is the real deal.

I thought lost in this thread somewhere I read, or maybe heard it on 97.1, Gene Smith denied that the uniform picture we've all seen is NOT the uniform we'll be sporting.

The next day Gene Smith released the statement confirming the rumor and going on to say he hasn't seen them yet and when they get the jerseys on the 15th, they'll post pictures.

I don't see any reason not to believe that.

Shelly Poe's denial involved the rumors circulating the other day (all silver, the leaked pic) but didn't refute the unpictured throwbacks, and later the press release obviously confirmed those. I'm hoping that leaked pic fits into her '10 different versions of the rumor, and all wrong' line (I'm paraphrasing)

Well, the good news is that Nike DID make Oregon throwbacks that did look authentic for the game against Cal, so maybe there is some hope.

Uni Watch

Has some of info on this.
From that page:

? The patterned undersleeves are exactly what Phil and Ricko have been proposing lately ? a way to restore sleeve graphics to a uniform that no longer has sleeves. It?d be nice if the graphics in this case were something other than a giant feather, but whaddaya gonna do. At least it?s a team-based graphic instead of some sort of Nike branding graphic.

This would be perfect for the OSU throwback - the veritcal stripe on the jersey and then the horizontal stripe on the sleeves.

Somebody has probably mentioned this, but maybe not. If so, I apologize for bringing it up again. It's my greatest hope to be forgiven.

It's just clothes, people. chill.

As soon as the opening kickoff takes place, none of us will care what the Bucks are wearing.

At least, none of us *should* care.

Go Bucks!!

If we ding anyone, it should be Oregon, since he lives closest to Phil Knight.

Actually, unless OB moved back from Cali; I'm the one that's closest. :paranoid:

However, it should also be stated that people outside of Portland LOVE their guns (for the most part). I'm sure I can round up all the Beaver (pun intended as well as figurative) fans that I know. It will be one helluva tOSU/toOSU militia.

So we shouldn't care if the Bucks come out in something designed to do nothing but market cloth for Nike? That we should take an icon that connects the team on the field to the history of Buckeye football and say, "go ahead, make us the Oregon of the Midwest."

I want no part of that. I want the history of the team out on the field and not in the hands of some marketing guru with factories in Sri Lanka geared up to sell more jerseys. It's crass profiteering and the University should be ashamed to be a part of it.

Point taken, cinci, but I think you're over-reacting. We are not, nor will we ever be the 'Oregon of the midwest' when it comes to unis. I think many of us are overestimating the influence Nike has on the look of our unis also. Fabric/fit maybe, but the color schemes and look must certainly be thoroughly approved by the university powers that be... At least that's how I imagine it should be...

If it results in more money being made available to the athletic department, which in turn means more money to provide to more student-athletes who can attend college? Damn right we shouldn't care! I cannot believe those fans who put aesthetics of the uniform over the welfare of our student athletes. I don't care if the team is asked to come out in Donald Duck outfits if there is a net benefit to the players and to other student-athletes at Ohio State.

Those don't look like throwbacks to me :(

Unfortunate kudos to Numbers (not because he's right, good work, but because those aren't what we hoped for...)

Like I said, it just seems like a ploy by Nike to get resistant teams to wear their stupid alternate jerseys.

Hopefully Gene Smith rejects these designs because they clearly aren't throwbacks and Nike was clearly being disingenuous when they pitched the idea.
