Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

The point is that kids will like a wide spectrum of things, including piles of terrible efforts as long as it arrives from one or more brands that they worship. That's a really easy standard to meet.

Such is true.

And old people will dislike a wide spectrum of things, including things kids like just because they deem it to be brand worship. A lot of times for no other reason than it has a logo.

More than one person here has said "the jersey is fine, except for all the Nike swooshes." That's literally the inverse of what you're describing.

What Jwins is saying is.....just because the kids like it isn't a reason to do it or to not do it. The kids will like whatever is put in front of them. Find a better reason.

fwiw, I've liked the ones that looked good, and didn't care about the ones that weren't. The black ones looked fine and nobody took Hopalong's Heisman away for wearing them. These ones look pretty sweet in pictures. The ones Pryor wore against Michigan were kind of goofy looking. But I had a better reason to like or dislike them other than "the kids like 'em". The kids like everything they're told to.

Not everyone is going to like them, I get that. I'm indifferent on most of the alternative jerseys, as I really only "liked" (as in wanted to see more than once) the white on white jerseys. But to discount a young person's opinion because "kids like anything put in front of them" is dismissive. It can just as easily be said that old people don't like it just because it's new. We had a guy upset about a hoodie design and asked to get back to "standard gear." Whatever that means.

Well the next time a jersey is revealed to a team and that team DOESN'T flip out like Oprah just gave them all new cars, then I'll allow for the possibility that the recruit's "opinions" on the jerseys is a valid reason to like or dislike them.

The kids will like almost anything they're told to like by certain brands. That's why that isn't an excuse for bad design.
If that statement were true then Oregon would have #1 classes every single year, and scUM would be in the top 3 yearly.

At the end of the day, I get that Urban puts an emphasis on throwback jerseys for one game a year, and kids that play the game and matter more than any message board poster. Just trotting out a new jersey won't make kids love a school, there's more to it, but let's not be naive and think that one of the reasons that Urban has been killing it with recruiting, is his ability to bond and see perspective from the perspective of young men, and not have the old man, get off our yard mentality. Change is part of the game i.e., whether its jerseys, or how an offense/defense is run, to how LBs are used

They were worn for the same reason mockups of the uniform were spotted in Meyer's office during an interview with ESPN more than a year before they were officially unveiled.

“That was sitting out on his coffee table for a reason,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said last year. “That wasn't for you guys to come and look at so he could impress you. It's sitting on the table because recruits saw it.”

Some fans loathe the thought of Ohio State wearing anything but silver helmets filled with Buckeye Leafs and scarlet jerseys with pro-style sleeve stripes. But winning trumps tradition, and the only way to continue to do so at a .919 clip is to attract the best prospects in the country.

And while flashy alternate uniforms aren't going to seal the deal for most recruits, they're certainly going to get them talking.

Whether we like them or not, not one coach or administrator cares! Alternate uniforms will be a continued thing, whether they're throwback uniforms or new designs by Nike, we must all just get over it. Some of us will like some of them, and some of us will not, it is what it is

kids love Oregon uniforms, even the hideous ones. They do not love the hideous unis from adidas nearly as much, because they don't like adidas.

I'm greedy. I want sizzle that isn't useless in five minutes. I want quality alternates. Thankfully they've done a pretty strong job with the last handful including this one.

Agreed, kids like Nike, but they also like wins and being put in the NFL even more. Disregarding the thought that because the kids like them, isn't a valid argument, is pretty wrong. Especially when Urban is literally stating that the alternate jerseys are done to get the attention of these kids who will in turn hopefully equate to wins for the program.

I hear you, and I don't think OSU has gotten to that extreme. Only using an alternate for one game a year, isn't bad. And each alternate has its people who love or hate them(I'm not a fan at a all of the 1916 ones for Nebraska). And fans that are staunch traditionalists will forever be at odds with the team because like it or not, CFB is big business and this game will put millions of dollars in OSU and Nike's pockets(not to mention aliexpress 8D)

there are a hundred ways to secure sizzle that kids like, making it a very weak justification.

There are less ways to do so with quality design that actually pays homage to the university instead of nike. Thankfully the last handful have done this and distanced themselves from the cookie cutter pants and styling of some of the early efforts.

Which alternate were you not high on?

Every set has had its weak elements, but last year's blackout was the first where the total package stunk, from concept to execution. A lot of this hate comes from being an occasional spotter--we hate colored numerals on colored jerseys almost as much as sets lacking TV numbers--but some is disappointment that OSU gave in to the "kewl" all black everything trend.
