THE PROCESS OHIO STATE TAKES WITH NIKE TO GET ALTERNATE UNIFORMS

Nike is a Fortune 500 company. The shoe and clothing manufacturer is a worldwide superpower when it comes to athletic apparel, and not by accident.

Founder Phil Knight's life's work is licensed with some of the world's top athletes and leagues — the NFL, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant, to name a few — to print money. Since 2007, Ohio State's done the same.

Buckeye football is a powerful entity on many fronts, a large piece being the equipment, attire and any other gear imaginable supporters purchase. Fans want to look like the football team does on Saturdays in the fall.

Saturday night, another page in the novel between the two sport giants takes center stage. Urban Meyer's No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Buckeyes host Penn State and are scheduled to don all-black uniforms and black, matte helmets for the matchup under the Ohio Stadium lights.

"Nike came to us and said, 'What do you think of this?' And my first reaction was, 'No way, no chance,'" Meyer said Monday. "And I looked and said 'Whoa,' and it looked pretty sharp."

Saturday figures to be one of the largest recruiting weekends of the season for Meyer and his program, and the idea of alternate uniforms is a huge selling point among the talented teenagers considering making Columbus their home for the next four years.

"Recruits are impressionable today and have a great deal of materialistic interest. So reality is we're going to respond to that," Ohio State Vice President and Director of Athletics Gene Smith said Monday. "Our job, our core mission is our student-athletes that we serve, first and foremost. And that includes the recruits we're trying to attract."

The beauty of a "brand" is that you don't need to look for the T/O/M on the field, you don't have to spot the dog, or Brutus. You see the uniform and you instantly know who it is. Why throw that away?

Because Nike gives us money. Then why doesn't Michigan/Alabama/USC/the Yankees have to do it?
Maybe because you don't have to give up your identity to get the money?

Do a throw back. I love it when I see the Packers running around looking like the days of Don Hudson. I'd love to see the Bucks come out of the tunnel looking like the 43/54/61/68 teams. But those are real throwbacks - as close to the original as a modern uniform can look.

Failing that at least retain some semblance of what you've worn for the 100+ years you've fielded a team.
How is wearing a black jersey that still has our stripe once throwing it ALL away?

Good times. I still think this entire idea is dumb, mainly because the uniforms are fucking ugly. I may change my tune when I actually see the team in them, but for now they're hideous. Plus the idea that Ohio State needs to do anything as gimmicky as a "black out" or whatever is asinine. I remember when fans drunk off their asses shouting obscenities was enough to get opposing teams to [Mark May] their pants.
Nobody said they NEED to.

that is the whole point

the only teams who do that gimmicky [Mark May] are the mid majors that do need to

when a CFB blue blood does [Mark May] a mid major would do, it does not reflect well on the blue blood
Not everybody looks at it like that. If you let yourself stop viewing it as anything other than a program having fun, you might accidentally enjoy it.
