Jersey / Uniform Discussion (OSU)

Sure. I just find it funny that they basically started it up, because Corvalis (wOSU) won their championships.

I don't know if that's true or not, because Pat Casey had been doing his thing out there for years, but they were able to pry a good coach away from a pretty good situation at Cal St. Fullerton to take that job. Had to figure they'd be pretty good right away.

The Beavs won in 2006 and 2007. And in July 2007 the Ducks announced they were going to field a team. I think it's a little bit more than a coinky-dink.

As Darren Rovell posted on Twitter:

Nike will sell Ohio State jerseys featuring 8 different players numbers this year, the most of any Nike school.

CPD: 8 Ohio State football jerseys for sale to start the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Who are the Buckeyes that most intrigue fans this season?

Every year, Ohio State's merchandising office works with the OSU coaching staff to determine which jersey numbers will be available for sale at the start of each season. The list is flexible and can change through the year as fans, and then retailers, show interest in a particular player or someone has a breakout year.

But the numbers picked at the start are chosen to anticipate the players who will generate the most interest
, and those who match up as the kind of guys the coaches want representing the Buckeyes.

It can be a big deal to some players. I can remember Thaddeus Gibson being very proud several years ago when he noticed his No. 90 on sale in stores.

Typically, five or six numbers are chosen each year. This season, the Buckeyes are starting with eight, which Darren Rovell wrote on Twitter today was the most of any college team wearing Nike gear.

I'll now leave a a little space before I reveal those numbers, passed on by the OSU merchandising department as the original list chosen for 2012. Again, things can change. Let's see how many you can get right.

Con't...

Can't help but just shake my head and laugh when I think about amateur-eligibility and read an article like this as we near the start of the season. C'est la vie.

I see no problem with this and don't see how "amateur-eligibility" has anything to do with it. The players get a full ride plus other perks (did you see the hotel they were staying in and the food they were served at the training table?). Not to mention getting to play the game they love at the highest level of competition and being able to be on national television every single week of their regular season this year. The money generated by jersey sales goes right back into the university coffers, which--guess what--pays their scholarships.

It's all about the Benjamins.

And making sure said Benjamins never get in the hands of the people who make the product.

Indeed. But where would NCAA be without said players promoting "The Product?"

The NCAA would have a century of deeply entrenched brand recognition. More importantly where would said players be?

MLB has a pretty good model to give us an idea. So how 'bout them Loiusville Lugnuts?

"The product' was made decades before any of the current players were born.
Say what? Are you still watching reruns of U of Minnesota's national championship run from 1907?

The product is college football, played by college athletes in 2012. Braxton Miller, John Simon et al are producing the product. The product would be equally entertaining without the "NCAA" imprimatur. And the ones benefiting financially are Urban Meyer, Nick Saban et al. You might not have a problem with that, and that's fine, but recognize who it is that the product could not exist without.

Oh of course, Ohio Stadium would be empty without Maurice Clarett & Terrell Pryor.

The brutal truth is that without the Ohio State, TSUN, USC, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas & Notre Dames of the world most of those that you are giving credit to would never have been heard of.

I don't see what the argument is. I agree that the universities provide the kids the opportunity to shine on this stage, and I'd hope the schools would benefit financially. My problem is the multimillionaire coaches that feed at the Nike/ESPN/CBS trough while the kids can't even sell their autographs. Not to mention the megaprofits to said Nike/ESPN/CBS.

Not really the right place for this discussion; we'll have to agree to disagree. And you can have the last word if you like.
