Jersey Scrimmage Breakdown & Play-by-Play

jwins, did they were practice jersey's or game jersey's? and if so did they have the new ones on.

I am glad to hear that Homan is playing well and that our LB corps are getting the job done. Also great to hear that our DB's are making plays.

Quickie Jersey Scrimmage Report
By John Porentas

In what most would call at least a mild upset, the defense won the jersey scrimmage, and the right to wear the scarlet jerseys at practice, by a score of 68-65.

The-Ozone will have a more detailed report later today and tomorrow, but here are our quick impressions of the scrimmage.
1) The offense ran a very vanilla offense. At times, it almost appeared that the coaching staff was not particularly concerned about putting up points.

2) While the game lacked artistry, at least offensively, there was impressive hitting throughout the game. The game was very spirited and remarkably free of glaring errors.

3) None of the quarterbacks were particularly impressive, but none were horrible either. Some of that has to be put on the game plan (or lack of it) as well as the fact that several key offensive linemen did not participate in the scrimmage. Kirk Barton was held out while he recovers from a minor injury, and Doug Datish has not played at all this spring. That made for some patchwork offensive line groups.

4) At tailback, Maurice Wells, Chris Wells and Eric Haw all saw considerable action, and all three looked good. Chris Wells ran with power and consistently fell forward for yardage. He also showed good speed for a big back. Maurice Wells appears to be an improved back. He is very quick and runs with authority. Eric Haw had the longest run of the day, a 71-yard touchdown scamper that came against the third-team defense.

5) Defensively, there were several standouts. Alex Barrow made a number of plays from his defensive end position, but the offensive line, as noted above, was not exactly intact. Larry Grant made some big hits, particularly in goal-line situations.

Curtis Terry was very impressive and made plays all day. The player who seemed to make the most big plays was defensive back Anderson Russell, who just seems to have the knack of being where the action is and making a play. Andre Amos also looked very solid. At linebacker, Ross Holman also stood out as a playmaker and recorded an interception in the game.

6) The most impressive passing play of the game was a touchdown pass from Troy Smith to Anthony Gonzalez. ON the play, however, Gonzalez was hit in the endzone and suffered a concussion. Gonzalez did not return to the scrimmage and said after the game that he did not remember the play nor most of the scrimmage prior to that play.

7) The big hit of the day was made by corner Mike Roberts who just leveled freshman wide receiver Brian Harline.

8) The closest thing to a negative that came out of the scrimmage was that Chris Wells put the ball on the ground about three times and lost one fumble.

Did our defense look even faster than last year?
DE - faster (welcome back gholston), and Wilson did not play (and he is supposed to have the fastest first step).
DT - faster. patterson is faster than green, and pitcock should be himself once he heals.
SAM - slightly slower?
Mike - similar
Will - similar
FC - slightly slower? hard to tell from one game
BC - similar
FS - faster
SS - faster

Grant: Not ready to live up to the hype yet. Very fast, physical player who can lay the wood. He needs a lot of work to crack the starting lineup, but he did just start practicing with OSU for the first time. I think he has the potential to someday move Laur to the Mike, however.

Larry will be fine eventually, but just like we discussed in his thread, he needs polish before he is ready for B10 football. The tools are there, but one cannot live on pure athleticism in this conference.

Well I am just now getting to the computer, but it looks like Jwins, put everything up there that needed to be said.

I will say that this was probably the most fun I have ever had, b/c it felt like we were vip and in the shoe basically by outselves with only about 500 ppl there.

Just one thing I want to say, I went there thinking we were going to be good, but I came away more impressed than I could of imagined.

By the way let the hype machine for Wells start churning b/c this kid is special.

Is it true that CWells fumbled 3 times? I don't want to sound overly negative, but I hope this was an aberration if it's true. :(
yes...but when you see a back with that kind of vision and rare blend of strength and speed, you can look past a little ball security trouble. That can be coached, the rest of it cannot.

As J already said we were watching Russell out there today and couldnt figure it out, we thought it was B. Underwood, just by process of elimination. Turns out it was Anderson Rusell and man was he all over the field, lighting people up and just playing all around good football.

His only not so good play was when he was stiff armed by Beanie, but Beanie is just in another world in terms of talent.

I also wanted to add that Ross Homan and Kurt Coleman, look to be future studs as well. Both of them looked liked they fit in out there, but both just need to get bigger. I tell you what tho, Homan had that interception and he was flowing to the ball very nicely and and was meet the ball carrier in the hole a couple times, but the one time Wells met him, Wells just buckled his knees and ran over him.

Does anyone see a reoccuring theme here.

As for Grant, he brings great athleticism, but only having two years here, I am just not sure if he is going to see the field as a starter at LB. He will for sure play ST, but he is behind Freeman, Animal Jr., Terry IMO and they all are either the same age or younger than him.

Thanks to JWinslow for typing up all my input.:tongue2: j/k, but he is the much faster typer and I wasnt going to be by a computer for awhile.

Also the first grader didnt have soft hands when Ryan Miller was throwing him ducks, but when a girl stepped up and threw him the ball he was pretty good.:tongue2:
