Japan hit with 9.0 Earthquake and 45 ft Tsunami

Now said to be an 8.9.

In various locations along Japan's coast, TV footage showed severe flooding,
with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters.
A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in
Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.

Edit: I hope there is minimal loss of life.

If you are old enough to remember the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 in San Francisco, also known as the World Series Earthquake, it was a 6.9. This was an 8.9.

A difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 in the amount of destructive energy released. IOW, wow.

The depth of the earthquake was 24 km. That is very shallow.

336 megatons is what an 8.9 magnitude earthquake is equivalent too. The largest Nuclear test ever attempted by the United States was 15 megatons.

EDIT: The B41 nuke was 25MT theoretically, but I don't think it was ever really tested.

Watching the video, I fear that there will be tens to hundreds of thousands of victims. Katrina was a minor annoyance compared to this disaster. I urge all of you to do what you can to donate to the Red Cross and United Way - or any church relief group that you support. Whatever our problems, nothing about our problems with coaching changes or suspensions - or tournament wins - seems to matter as much now.

wow CNN is now showing a massive water swirl that looks somewhat like a Hurricane and some poor bastard is on a boat going towards the middle of the swirl. I hope for his sake there's not a massive sinkhole causing it....

Thanks, Mike. I feel much better.

On a serious note, to echo Gator's point, reports out of Japan show the power of this type of thing (earthquake/tsunami). Pretty spooky stuff.

Hawaii Civil Defense is advising all residents in tsunami inundation zones to evacuate immediately.

The alert, issued at 10:38, reads "Leave all coastal evacuation zones immediately. Refer to Hawaiian Telcom or Paradise Pages for evacuation maps."

The earliest that hazardous waves could hit Hawaii is 2:59 a.m., said the agency, according to Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Ewa Beach.

A tsunami warning was issued at 9:30 p.m. for Hawaii as a result of a 8.9-magnitude earthquake near the east coast of Honshu, Japan.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch at 7:56 p.m. after the quake struck 231 miles northeast of Tokyo. The watch was upgraded to a more serious warning about 9:30 p.m.

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the agency said. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

The warning center said wave heights cannot be predicted, but the first wave may not be the largest.

Chip McCreary, director of the warning center, said the latest forecast models show "wave amplitudes of up to 2 meters (6 feet) beyond normal sea levels in Hawaii.

Traffic backing up all around these areas, especially Waikiki.

Great, just had a slight earthquake off of the island of Hawaii.

Still predicting the first wave to hit around 3:00 a.m.
