James “not elite” Franklin (HC Penn St. Nittany Lions)

James Franklin says he intends to remain at Penn State ‘for a long time’

The USC job is widely expected to come open by this time next week, and in that event it’s been speculated the Trojans would target Penn State head coach James Franklin — or that Franklin (or his camp) would target the Trojans.

Franklin was a whispered candidate the last time the USC job came open and his stock has only risen since then, leading Penn State to the 2016 Big Ten championship and a Fiesta Bowl win last year.

The Penn State head coach was asked about his possible interest in that possible opening this week on multiple occasions, and Franklin’s strategy to address the speculation was to avoid it — which only made the speculation stronger.

After practice on Wednesday, Franklin conducted his customary post-practice availability and offered this statement that truly will close down the speculation.

“But, obviously, (I) have all the plans in the world to be here and be here for a long time, so I just wanted to address that because it became something that I did not want or intend,” he said.

Here’s the full statement.

No surprise but I wouldn't be surprised if Franklin jumps ship at some point. His best chance would be right now though unless UFM retires after this year. McSorely gone after this year and their 2nd string guy didn't impress. I have a feeling 4 losses next year will be considered a good season.

If USC comes and he is smart, he would take it. The Big 10 is East stacked and regardless of how much whining PSU fans do, the 2 premier schools are OSU and Michigan. USC is the premier Pac 12 school and the PAC 12 South is garbage right now (including USC)
He should AT LEAST listen. Hey, it's currently the golden age of the grifter....he may as well cash in on it too.

That and keeps hype / honeymoon phase rolling. I think the honeymoon is over at PSU.
He could find himself on the hot seat shortly or trade up for another 5 years before they notice the shine's faded.

The honeymoon was over before the blocked FG in '16

That was like a court ordered marriage counseling that just delayed the inevitable.

The PSU fanbase, by and large, understands that he is a terrible coach/good recruiter and that his douchebag personality isn't going to create this "elite" team they keep fantasizing about.
