Michigan the leader in pursuit of star Ohio tight end/defensive end
Sam Webb
Recruiting Ohio always has been an integral part of the success of Michigan football, and coach Brady Hoke made it clear in his first year that that will continue to be the case. The Wolverines hit the Buckeye State hard in 2012 and reaped great rewards in the form of nine talented prospects. For 2013, they've strengthened their efforts in Ohio by putting five coaches on the ground and are again focused on plucking some of its best recruits. Among those already identified as high on their priority list is Pickerington North tight end/defensive end Jake Butt.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pounder was a two-way force for his team last year. From his tight-end post, he hauled in 27 passes for 450 yards and seven touchdowns. And from his defensive-end slot, he registered 10 sacks and 17.5 tackles for a loss. That versatility has commanded attention from coast to coast. To date, he has accumulated offers from 18 schools, including UCLA, Iowa, Northwestern, Boston College, Maryland, Tennessee, Stanford and Michigan.
"I have my size, athleticism, and I don't take a single play for granted," Butt said, confidently. "You're going to get the best from me every single play. You can't teach height, so I'm going to give that to the team. As a tight end, if the ball's thrown to me and it hits my hands, it's not touching the ground. It's a catch! On defense if it's third and long and it's a pass rush situation, I'm not going to get blocked by my opponent."
