The best player for the Ohio State basketball team is tied to Jake Diebler's future.
The Ohio State basketball program continues to search for ways to get out of the hole it's been in for the last three years. In each of those three seasons, the Buckeyes have failed to reach the NCAA Tournament. It looked like they were going to break that awful streak last season, but collapsed down the stretch.
There are some Buckeye fans who are already out on Jake Diebler ( I don't count myself among those people...yet) even though he is just approaching his second full season as a head coach. He made a lot of mistakes last year, but he should have learned from them in the offseason.

Diebler is going to face some pressure from fans who never wanted him hired in the first place. A segment of the fan base wanted the Ohio State Buckeyes to make an outside hire. Instead, they promoted from within. Diebler has one guy who can help him get those fans to change their minds.

Bruce Thornton has been the best player the Buckeyes have had in each of the last two seasons. He is back and should be better than ever. He's the only guy that Ohio State can rely on to create some offense with any regularity. Thornton is the key to the team's success..

In his annual performance review, Ross Bjork said Jake Diebler met expectations in his first season and he will support Diebler “with all the tools to compete” moving forward.

I mean if you REALLY want that graveyard of coaches moniker to stick in recruiting circles, I guess you could go this route.
Short of a complete failure of a season - like less than 10 wins or no Big Ten wins at all or something really really low - he'll be the coach in 2026/27.

Of course that's not what w WANT to happen but it was a bit of an experiment so I expect a lot of pressure for a great season.

Yeah and since it's an experiment, it'll get into year 3, minimum.
People need to be patient. Ohio State isn't a powerhouse in basketball. It takes time to rebuild it, even in this era. You have to convince kids this is the place to be. Stability goes a long way to doing that.

But there are a lot of people that think we should be and with that Ohio State should never be a place to cut your teeth in any sport. That microscope is real

Well, it doesn't hurt to dream, for the first part of that statement.
I do agree with the 2nd part of that though. This isn't the place to learn how to be a head coach. But at this point, Diebler has the reigns so it is what it is.

Too soon old, too late smart
Absolutely, the microscope is real, and doesn't miss a thing. There's enough of us Buckeye fanatics with an opinion, and no hesitation to share said opinion given an inch of space. Hate to bring up football in a basketball page, but Ryan Day had never been a head coach, and he seems to be doing pretty well. Sitting at the #2 coaching position, gives one a great opportunity to watch, learn, and then implement those ideas that work, and discarding those that don't. I still have great confidence in Diebler, and believe we'll see a version of him this year that is different than last year's. Really don't know how much tOSU/NIL/donor resources he's getting, but would opine that much of that is spread around the current roster. It does seem that the 'great' recruits that tOSU gets in are one-and-done guys, and that there's not enough of them to make a difference. Anyway, here's hoping that this year leads to the Dance. PS, is the 'no hire' of family members (called nepotism I believe) an Ohio State rule, or a B10 rule? As seem to recollect Iowa (football) having father-son, and Xichigan having same.

Jake Diebler with another 5-star commit today! Too bad the haters are already tuned out can't celebrate a big commitment for the Buckeyes. Let's be real, NIL is constantly changing college sports, and OSU has often been outbid for talent both years Diebler has been the coach, and he's also had to deal with losing starters that were seen as building blocks of the future to the portal. In spite of this, he's managed to get a couple of very high profile commitments. Whether OSU is positioned similarly regarding the NIL competition in the future with the Commission remains to be seen. It's sad to me fans are eager to cut ties with a coach because he was a former assistant under a coach who did not fare well and hasn't yet gotten the program into the upper echelon in two years. I wholeheartedly believe in giving the man a real chance, especially considering the NIL factor has been working against him & he's been able to get some very good recruits in spite of that.

No doubt he's killing it on the recruiting trail at the moment.
I wasn't expecting him to get us to the top of the B1G out of the gate, but it would be nice to make the tournament again at least. Last year was an incredibly frustrating season. Hopefully we see improvement from this team as this season goes along and they get there.

I agree that it would be nice to see these guys make the tournament, but even if they come up short I don't think it makes sense to put him on the hot seat or anything like that. IMO, there's just been way too much change within the program and in college sports to not have more patience to let the man really build the program, especially when he's having some success lining up future stars.
Last year was disappointing. In hindsight, obviously the losses of two solid starters to transfer & having to scramble to replace them in the spring with a brand new coach really put the program in a bind. I do think the transfers Diebler has brought in for this season seem to fit better within the team concept than a couple of the transfers he signed last season, so they should at least be a more cohesive team even if they don't have the same level of talent. My hope is Ojianwuna will eventually play this season, and I believe he is the key to them really having a tournament team.
