Chatman was suited up for Illinois, just didn't play - presumably because Diebler knew OSU had their hands full with Shannon & Co the way it was. If OSU plays in the NIT, surely it would make sense to have him take over Bonner's role.Am as surprised as all the above posters. Here's hoping that the last eight games will be enough to keep the core of tOSU's team together until next year. With the sophs there, plus the frosh that found the floor in those eight games, there's an excellent core of players. Need to fill in around the edges with another scorer, and another big would help tremendously, the development has been there, and truly enjoy the changes that Diebs #2 has made. Playing the frosh early, and veterans late was very successful. PS, anyone know why Chatham wasn't suited up for Illinois? He shone at times during this stretch run, and hope he isn't going to the portal. PSS, how about Diebs #1 getting some plastic surgery and coming back?
Didn't think he had a chance when he was handed the interim. But the way the team responded to him and his rotations made me a believer he should get a shot. Illinois ref debacle just cemented it.
Major congrats to Coach Diebler. 5 years is wayyy longer than I thought would be coming, but I am really optimistic about the team under his watch. Well earned with what he was up against coming in as an interim HC, which was an absolute dumpster fire. Hopefully the recruiting is there because it seems pretty apparent he knows the game well and gets the most out of his players in terms of effort.Official.
Thread title change needed.
5 years.
4 years is the absolute minimum you want to give someone for recruiting reasons. You dont want to have a lame duck coach who recruits don't know whether he's gonna be there for their college careers. I believe in recent years OSU has been pretty consistent at making sure coaches always have more than 4 years left for this reason.Major congrats to Coach Diebler. 5 years is wayyy longer than I thought would be coming, but I am really optimistic about the team under his watch. We'll see on that but for right now, I will just say I am stoked for Diebler and the team.
Yeah I expected 3. My wife has MS and a Med card as welllol gotcha bro. For context, my wife is a disabled vet with a med card, and we live in a full legal state. After flying for 15 years in the AF, I gave up drinking. It was bad when I was special ops, but the drinking got more frequent when I started flying VIPSAM missions internationally (Vice Pres, NSA, Combatant Commanders). When I got out a few years ago I didn’t want to be the father with a drink in his hand, so I turned to late night usage of pot for relaxation. Even grow our own near our garden in the summer lol
My wife has MS and a Med card as well
I’m really interested how the staff shapes up over the next month.Wishing the best for Coach Diebler! I think he knows a guy who can coach shooting
It's the right move for a number of reasons.
1) He earned it. He took a team that was hard-broken and built a cohesive group of young men who played hard every game.
2) He looks to have real coaching chops. The way he deployed his rotations showed a willingness to adapt to changing situations, something we've lacked for many years.
3) He has roots and established relationships with 5 years in the program.
4) There are no sure things out there. Dusty May? Nice run last year and has run it back this year with a decent team, but how many of those kind of hires went tits-up? Sean Miller is a scumbag and was a non-starter, for me anyway.
5) I didn't realize it until I read it tonight, but it looks like he may have real recruiting chops. He recruited 5* Darius Garland to frickin' Vanderbilt of all places.
I'm excited about the future again. Is this a sure-thing? Hell naw, but there are no homerun hires out there and anybody that they brought in from the outside would come with inherent risk. It's a prudent move.
I'd definitely love to see Jake bring Jon back to Columbus.I’m really interested how the staff shapes up over the next month.
Jon and Greg Oden are on the basketball Ops side of Matta’s staff.
I think he needs more experience than that. Oden is back home where he probably wants to be. And Dials looks like he’s in a similar role here. I’ve seen improvement from Okpara so whoever is handling that seems to be doing well in my amateur opinion.
I could be intrigued by Jon though - again, basketball family that knows the game.
He played under Bryce Drew at Valpo who is doing a great job at Grand Canyon. Might need to pick from that tree somehow. Really no telling who else he knows in the coaching world.
