I am so pissed. I came back from a week plus of vacation and received a love note that we have been turned over to collections for a $55 medical bill. The best part is the bill does not even apply to my family. I have an incredibly common name and it seems the billing people at the hospital put it to the wrong person.

The worst part is it is going to take days to straighten out and we are going to be applying for a mortgage in the next couple of days since we are moving back to Ohio.

I really need a drink right about now.

Seriously, I work in the mortgage industry and deal with this stuff all of the time. I would apply right now and maybe it wont show up yet. Most companies will use a credit report for 90-120 days. Make sure you keep every piece of paper work on this and make the hospital write a letter of explaination for the fuck up.

Fortunately, my new employer will be providing my mortgage, but I really do not want to make a poor impression. I have already told my insurance representative and the insurance company I need documentation on the issue. What is really frustrating is the insurance company is owned by the hospital, but they do not talk.

Thanks for the advice on getting things done quickly. I still want that drink.

I'm pretty sure the wife is the breadwinner in this family and she actually leaves the kids at home to watch BIM.

I once got a similar notice about my truck being in a wreck. I had to write a nice long letter explaining that my truck was not in a wreck as I am the only one that drives it and it was parked at the airport when the wreck occurred.

At least my excuse had some validity.:wink2:

Send a response (certified) to the collection agency that says, "I dispute the validity of this debt." My understanding is that will bar them from doing anything that damages your credit report (at least until the dispute is resolved). I think you have 30 days to do this.

Most of these people that work in collections and billing are idiots... especially when it come to medical bills. We had a lot of bills when my boys were born.... we had a bill sent to collection even though it was paid. The person at the hospital even told us that sometimes even though a bill is paid they send it to collections... uh, WTF? It screwed up our credit and took 6 months to resolve... my wife had to handle it because I would have drove to the hospital and shoved it up their collective asses... but I'm not bitter over it.

Ohio State billed my second daughters birth under the wrong name. One of the telephone reps there told me she didn't believe I had named my daughter her "right name". I did drive there and stuff it up her ass. Ohio State ate the bill

Sadly, this is not the first time this hospital billing confusion has happened. We lived in a small town a few years ago and the local hospital started sending me bills. Considering I had never stepped foot in the hospital as a patient I knew they were not my bills. I sat down several times with their customer service people, including the manager, and they could not get past the fact there might be two people with the same name. I happened to know the chair of the hospital board. I mentioned it to him and never had a problem again. Fortunately, it never went to collections.
