Actually.....Send a response (certified) to the collection agency that says, "I dispute the validity of this debt." My understanding is that will bar them from doing anything that damages your credit report (at least until the dispute is resolved). I think you have 30 days to do this.

The salesman asks me if I had some pants tailored as well. I told him just the suit. They belonged to someone with the same name.
On the good side, I was approved for the mortgage today without incident. Hopefully I will get this health bill straightened out soon.
