It Looks Like I was Right (Hurricane Katrina Merged)

But there is a philosophical question that has to be explored here. What kind of society exists where people do this shit?
A normal one. This is about nothing more than survival at this point. People see transportation ... they're shooting to take over and get the hell out. For gangs it's about the turf. The best analogy I can come up with is people taking shelter in a shopping mall in Dawn of the Dead.

Most of us would probably freak out if we were isolated for a single day. This is going on Day 4, and people are starting to realize the water isn't receding. These people have no TV or radio communication and don't know that they need to leave. For many people the extent of what's going on in the outside world doesn't extend beyond their street, their house, or even their attic.

It is starting to look like "Escape from New York" down there now. I sure hope they can restore some type of order down there before it gets totally out of hand.
I hate to criticize anyone in a situation like this, but the more I see and hear the mayor of N.O. on TV the more I think he is an idiot. I understand communication is severely limited if not impossible right now, but all this guy does is bitch about what people are doing who are trying to help. I don't see him doing anything to help the situation at all.

Maybe we should send Guliani down there. :)

I've been thinking the exact same thing since his 'way too many friggin' cooks in the kitchen' comment. Talk about biting the hand that feeds ...

Don't like it? Fix it you ignorant fuck. You're the mayor!!!

Beat me to it on the Escape from New York analogy --

Maybe Snake can help if Guliani's tied up ..

Lord alone knows they need some semblance of order, else help will be difficult to deliver.

NO will be a total loss...
the death toll will be incomprehendable...
cholera, dysentery, malaria, west nile virus, hepatitis, and other deseases will take a horrific toll...

this catastrophe is of Biblical proportions... and as with the tsunami, is evidence of the disasters associated with the last days...

i don't want to preach at any of you, but if you have any doubts about the condition of your soul, now is a good time to reconcile yourself with God...

what ridiculous nonsense.

Compared to disasters this planet has seen in it's history, this is nothing.

Compared to earthquakes in 3rd world nations, this is nothing

As much as I hate to, I have to agree with Tibs.We here in the West live a pretty sheltered life. If any of you have seen the movie Hotel Rwanda that should give a little idea of some of the horrors that have occurred in other less developed countries.I believe over a million people were murdered in Rwanda and the US didn't even intervene.Yes this tragedy is bad but I do not believe it's the Doomsday scenario that some have predicted.

You also have to put the numbers into reference. There were only like 6-7 million people living in rwanda when around a million of them were killed. That would be like no one intervening on our behalf if 30-40 million people were murdered.

I was thinking similar thougts myself. One thing we all take for granted is the structure of our society. NO reveals how close to the edge we live. What allows folks to loot at will and shoot at rescue hellicopters is not so much the loss of order but the loss of the perception of order. The sudden realization that there are no consequences. The spontaneous voiding of the social contract.

Well now things are taking an interesting turn. There are reports of police officers looting, including breaking into ATM machines. Whether these are legitimate, pre-emptive measures is probably something we'll never know. Let these idiots have plasma tvs and jewelry. Focus on the people who are hindering the rescue effort.

IMO.. a key consideration... There are many cultures (and especially 3rd world) that are used to spending considerable time finding food, water and medicinals... WE are not such a society... thus... it is absolutely catastrophic...

we are a society that works for income... to pay for our lifestyle... there is no work... there is no income... thus there is no lifestyle... for MONTHS... then there will be no vehicles...

and don't believe for a second we have any idea how big the problem is... this whole thing is in it's infancy... the death toll will blossom.. and wait till the disease starts..
