It Looks Like I was Right (Hurricane Katrina Merged)

One of the more annoying and stupid things that has been said by some of the media types and politicians on TV is that "Nobody ever believed this could happen"

uh, except that National Geographic talked about it in an issue last year.

And the NO Times-Picayune ran a multiseries special a while ago detailing the dangers of NO and the vulnerabiltiy of the levee. Unfortunately, I can't find the link on their website anymore...they had brought it back a few days ago before the hurricane hit.

Well said.

But in this day of 24 hour news programs with lenses pointing everywhere we are never going to pull the trigger on looters. No mayor, governor or president is going to order it.

But I do wish the talking heads would quit reminding looters that there will be no consequences.

Thanks Oh8ch. I feel the same way that the possibility of martial law ever being imposed is just about zero because no one in the position to make that call wants to become a scapegoat. So it is a futile argument, however, it did let me vent a little and I feel a little better now.

The media may not actually be doing any harm just because I do not think anyone down there can get the news.

Nobody knew this could happen???? Anyone with a clue knew this could happen - a city in a below sea level bowl surrounded by water, in an area susceptible to hurricanes, on a coast. HELLO!!!!!

There were predictions of a "30 foot deep toxic lake" over the weekend, in an effort to convince everyone to get the hell out of there. Obviously, the threat was known and publicized.

My initial reaction is shoot the looters, but when there's no food, no water, no anything I have a hard time judging those trying to survive. The people stealing TVs, jewelry, etc. are too stupid to live anyway - shoot 'em. People stealing food and water, well...

I also get a kick out of those who say "Who knew this could have happened"? I watched a one hour special on the discovery channel last year talking about this very scenario...

I think it also sucks that they are having such a tough time getting people in there for rescue and recovery......I'd suggest sending tens of thousands of national guardsman down there........but they are all in Iraq........... :( I guess there are bigger priorities on foreign soil than here at home...

Just couldn't resist, eh phatsacs? :roll2:

There is no shortage of people to help - the government is sending thousands, including national guard and other military personnel and tons of equipment and supplies. That's not even counting the Red Cross and other volunteers. The problem is NOT a lack of people, it's a destroyed infrastructure and a shitload of water.

Then again, it's all over the news, so you already knew that.

If you must use a hurricane to push your politics feel free to go hang out with Sheehan and the rest of the moonbats.

I suppose the thing that people around the world must be seeing is that the United States is not invincible. Even the most advanced country in the world is at the mercy of natural forces in the world.

Much of the dissatisfaction in Iraq is that people expected the Americans to come in and fix decades of problems in two weeks. Every time there is a natural disaster, the Americans are expected to rock up and fix things over night.

Now, everyone knows. This is incredibly sad and we should all keep the victims of this hurricane, in New Orleans, Biloxi and elsewhere, in our prayers. God bless them all.

I just love the looters. Where are you going to bring that plasma TV that you just stole? To your house that is flooded up to the attic? My thinking of the looters is the stuff they are stealing will get ruined by the flood water anyway. The only thing that worries me is reading that the first area emptied out by looters was the gun department at WalMart.

Basically Martial law is useless, the best course of action is to forcefully evacuate the whole area so they can stop rescuing people and focus on cleaning up the city by counting the dead and pumping the water out of there.

NO will be a total loss...
the death toll will be incomprehendable...
cholera, dysentery, malaria, west nile virus, hepatitis, and other deseases will take a horrific toll...

this catastrophe is of Biblical proportions... and as with the tsunami, is evidence of the disasters associated with the last days...

i don't want to preach at any of you, but if you have any doubts about the condition of your soul, now is a good time to reconcile yourself with God...

just in on Fox News: the evacuation of the Superdome has been halted due to the fact that people are shooting at the Military choppers who are running the rescue missions...

rival gangs are shooting at each other inside the Superdome...

there is a rumor floating around here that Harrah's lost literally everything they owned on the Gulf coast... billions and billions of dollars... Harrah's is one of the three maga-corporations that virtually own all the major Las Vegas resorts... they will go belly up...

i feel sorry for all the schmucks who got caught up in the real estate craze here in Vegas... they will take major hits... this could very well cripple the Las Vegas economy...

Last night on CNN (Aaron Brown) one of the field reporters mentioned that there were numerous complaints of gang violence and rapes occuring in the Superdome. Aaron didn't pursue that line of questioning, and I don't think it's something that the American people want to hear about. Consider though that the Superdome was holding approximately 23,000 people, most from the ghettos, there was virtually no security force there for that population, and the building was under blackout conditions from loss of electricity and generator back-up. :(

As for the looting in the streets of NO, I don't know what to think about it. A report last night indicated that the police were looting the medical supplies and water before the gangs got to the stores, and many police allowed looting of clothes and shoes and things provided they fit the person taking them off the rack. There is zero communication ability in NO right now, so you've got looters who don't know what the world is seeing, don't know what other people two blocks away from them are doing, don't know that the flood is not going away any time soon, and on top of that you have 100's of police units that cannot communicate with each other and have no gas for their patrol cars.

The situation needs to be taken control of by the US military before the gangs, looters, etc begin burning buildings. As things are right now, the historic French Quarter is ok as it is the original city of NO and was built above sea level. If gangs torch a building in the quarter though, the whole thing will go up like a wild forest fire with no means to get sufficient emergency personal to the area.

... should also be pointed out that there are people in the city, such as in the French Quarter, who are OK, have vehicles in parking garages with street access, and can get out, but are afraid to because of the fear of people on the street.
