Is this guy full of crap

This guy isn't much bigger than me. He's probably 5'10"/205, 210 at the most. I just don't see it. Fortunately, if I call him out on it, he's too slow to catch me.

Call him on it and watch his technique. I remember a kid in high school who always could bench press a ton, but he would put his hands at the ends of the bar so he did not lift far. We never recognized his "lifts."

When you do 400, someone has seen it... because you don't do 400 without a spotter... and usually you only trust one of the stud personal trainers at the gym... or another beast spotter... someone has to be able to pull close to 300 lbs off you if your arms give out... so, either you see him do it... or ask who witnessed it...

and hawg is definitely right.. shorter arms help

age isn't important... with age could be better technique...

When I did my max of 355 about five years ago, I was 44 years old, 6'0", and 195. Seeing as he's two inches shorter (in body height that is  ) and 10 pound heavier, and about the same age as I was, he may not be bullshitting. The only way to know for sure is to make him bench it in front of you.

I call bullshit.
Frankly I am surprised it wasn't higher Mili... if your arms weren't as long, no doubt you'd have hit 400... don't any of you guys go to a gym?? and size is not the major piece.. the biggest dude in my gym can't do 3... bewilders me...

a 245 lb Pinceton freshman FB player was doing sets well over 300 Monday night... and a NJ doctor hit over 300 as a 60 or 65 year old just a couple years ago... I know his trainer...

there's a number of possibilities too... is this a freeweight lift, a smith machine lift, or machine... three COMPLETELY different lifts... but all three could be "a 400 lb benchpress"

Ask Kudla. He has been known to do 610. Thats crazy shit.

Our swim team was in the weight room lifting and all. The wrestling coach comes in and puts 225 on the bar. Does it about 10-12 times. Then puts two more 45's on. 315. Does that like 3-4 times. He then pops a couple 35's on. 385. Does that once. He had no spotter at all. Good thing he didn't have any trouble. There was no way us swimmers could've done anything if that bar fell on him.

BTW he does weigh like 390.

One of our LB's who is 230 lbs and would bench 345. I saw him do it.

Our starting RB(195 lbs) was "said" to do 400 once. I didn't see it myself. That is crazy for a RB, hell for any HS player. I called BS on that one.

Back to the original post. Does he have really short arms? Usually guys who can bench a lot have short arms for their height.

Right on the head. Look at all the powerlift champs - they all have round barrel chests, and short arms. Its just simple physics - torque is given by r X F, and for a given F, the longer your arms, or r, the harder it is to move the weight.

Actually torque is for twisting.
The correct equation would be work. Work is force X distance. The longer the arms the more work needs to be done to lift the same weight.
Anything is possible, we have all seem some gym rat pump up more than we thought they should be lifting.
400 is a heavy load. I never came near it, 37-38" sleeves. Hell I would not try to squat it for fear you would find my kneecap in another part of the gym.
