AT HIS POSITION, yes. without a doubt...BuckStocksHere said:Jerry Rice is the GOAT. (even though I don't like him)
hmm... Emmit played with other H.O.F.ers, on Super Bowl winning teams... as did Walter Payton... as did Jim Brown (well, he won NFL Titles, not his fault there wasn't a Super Bowl back then)... which is a FAR CRY from the garbage teams that Barry Sanders Played on... let's see Emmit rush for 2,000 on that shithole team in Detriot... I DON'T THINK SO... Sanders rushed for 15,000 yards in NINE seasons (only stands to reason he would have broken the all time record in his tenth- MUCH sooner than Emmit, even though Emmit had the better supporting cast)... it took Emmit 13 seasons, all the while surrounded by some of the best talent in the League, to reach those lofty numbers...BuckStocksHere said:Emmitt was better in his own era even. Walter Payton. Jim Brown.
all great QBs... but i think it's unfair, once again to compare Super Bowl Winners, who were surrounded by talent to Barry's situation... or to put it like this, how would they have fared if the roles had been reversed? Marino? i dunno... for all those yards, he certainly couldn't get the Wins when they counted the most...BuckStocksHere said:I think you can make a case for a lot of QB's. Montana, Elway, Marino. Favre.
BuckStocksHere said:I never saw guys from wayyy back so I can't pretend to argue their case. My dad still says Jim Brown was the greatest he ever saw play.
That doesn't even take into account any defensive guys.... hard to gauge defense vs offense.

I think you could make the case at ANY position for Jerry Rice....

actually he DID play ten seasons 89-98 so no, he would not/DID NOT break the record in his tenth.
it took Emmit 13 seasons, all the while surrounded by some of the best talent in the League, to reach those lofty numbers...
The greatest fallacy in the argument. How do you disregard a player for playing on a better team. Did he not have anything to do with that team being better? Mind you, they were complete shiat before he arrived. We are talking ONE victory season here. That's right 1-15. Was Detroit THAT bad?

Wasn't really comparing them to Barry because to me there is no comparison. The point though was that these are all in discussions as greatest football player ever. I don't discount Marino because he never won the big one, just like Barry. Look at Marino's #'s.... sick. However, I think Montana is the greatest QB ever. Never saw another QB so money in my life.
fair enough... i just wonder how high the bar would be set if Detriot had actually sacked up and got some talent to help Barry... what if Barry played 15 seasons instead of nine? how many yards would have have then? 22,000? 23?... his only knock is that he played for a shitty team... put him behind Dallas' O-line from Championship years, and he would probably run for 2,500 yards in a season...
That's one of the points - he DIDN'T play 15 seasons. That in itself says a lot about Emmitt's durability and greatness. Emmitt is no hulk of a man either 5-9 or 5-10 depending on who you talk to.
You can always do WHAT IF's but they don't factor into reality. What if Marino won 3 super bowl's. I don't think there would be a question he was the greatest QB ever. But he won none. WHAT IF Jim Brown played longer. WHAT IF Gale Sayers played longer. WHAT IF Barry played longer? WHAT IF is great discussion fodder over a beer, but its relevance in this discussion is useless.
and think about Barry in College! all he did was rush for 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns in TEN GAMES during his Heisman run!!! that's the kind of numbers that NFL talent puts up in HIGH SCHOOL... and he did it against major college talent... and if you add the Bowl Game, he had over 2900 yards and 41 TDs in just 11 games... astounding!!!
surely it is... but college has NO, as in ZERO relevance to the NFL discussion.
nope... no way was anyone ever better than Barry... the stats back that up...
Completely off base again. The STATS back up Emmitt as the greatest ever! The only way Barry gets in is based on WHAT IF's and HOW COME's.... I don't need to EVER bring those up when talking about Emmitt because his numbers speak for themselves.
Emmitt = 3 super bowl rings, Barry = 0. He is discussed in the same manner as Marino. Great players that never won anything. Do you hold that against them, nah...at least you shouldn't in my opinion. But you can't discount the titles that other players HAVE won.
Great point. Two completely different runners.High Lonesome said:"...put him behind Dallas' O-line from Championship years, and he would probably run for 2,500 yards in a season..."
I don't know that Barry would have done any better than emmitt on that team. The cowboys built their team based around emmits straight ahead style. Barry, who without a doubt is one of the greatest, was not a straight ahead type of guy. Players like emmitt get put down because of their style all the time. Most recently it has been curtis martin, even ced benson on the college level. They are not flashy but they are the epitome of consistant. Hank Aaron comes to mind for a baseball example. It will always be the chicken or the egg arguement, did emmitt look great because of his line or did he make his line look great. The truth is somewhere in the middle. The fact is though, Emmitt put up some amazing numbers and belongs right in the middle of any GOAT discussion.
hmm... i seem to remember someone winning TWO Heisman Trophies who fits that description to a Tee... i'm pretty sure he held the all time college rushing record for about 20 years or so as well...BuckStocksHere said:You DO NOT pull a running back(who you call the greatest ever) out when you need him the most, at the goal line. You simply cannot be the greatest ever if you can't slam it in to complete the feat. Getting pulled out of the game for the likes of some stiff FB to pound it in through the behemoths doesn't constitute the greatest ever.
Pretty sure Barry got 222 in his last bowl game, to end the season at 2,850.lvbuckeye said:and think about Barry in College! all he did was rush for 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns in TEN GAMES during his Heisman run!!! that's the kind of numbers that NFL talent puts up in HIGH SCHOOL... and he did it against major college talent... and if you add the Bowl Game, he had over 2900 yards and 41 TDs in just 11 games... astounding!!!

he should rightfully have it but it was his choice to retire. at his age and being away from that game for so long, with all the speed and strength of the young guys playing these days, he will not have a shot at the record.luckobucko said:Perhaps Barry wants to come back and claim the rushing yards title (which he should rightfully have.) The fact he has been out of the game for so long could mean he is completely healthy and ready to play for a winner..
and my God he was fast....not TGII fast but still blazin...Buckeyeskickbuttocks said:Good point, Dickerson was incredible.
