Is it OK to be a fan of teams from different schools?

buddy, you're no true ohio state fan if you'd rather see duke beat ohio state than ohio state beat duke. you can rationalize this all you want, but here's the point:

i have more respect for a scum fan who loves everything maize and blue than a part-time, pick-and-choose "buckeye."

Kiddo, if you can't correlate my responses to your bull[censored], I'd suggest you either read what you're posting BEFORE YOU POST IT, or just stop, because the trolling thing isn't your best suit.

Y'all are absolutely right...

...there's no use in my trying to say anything I haven't already said before

Y'all have at all right here to say whatever you'd like to say...

...and BM80, if your fallback is attempting to make fun of my age, I'd say "the trolling thing" isn't YOUR strong suit. :wink2:

so you put random words inside quotation marks and then throw in a :wink2: on a whim?

I put that word in quotes and threw in the :wink2: because I thought it was funny that you took my pictures as a "rebuttal" to anything...

...if anything that'd be the proper use of the quotes...

Inferring that the word in quotes isn't really what the word's definition is...

Am I wrong there?

I decided to move this prematurely terminated equine pregnancy out of the college football forum.

It's a long [censored]ing offseason.

Sorry BB

I definitely threw it off track...

can we start a thread for when we think robbie is going to be bullied into leaving? i smell fresh fish.

Why would I leave?

This isn't high school. I don't have to fit in with the "cool" kids...

I'm here because I love the Buckeyes and I'm about 98% certain that with the exception of folks like yourself...this is the best place to discuss/respect/appreciate them...

except when they're playing Duke in basketball
the dookie still doesn't get it.

like i stated, true buckeyes don't pick and choose when they're a buckeye. if you ever want a team to beat ohio state simply because you like that team more; throw your scarlet and gray in the trash, sack up, and be a real fan of the other program. don't jump on one school's bandwagon just because its basketball team is good (and its football program sucks) and then jump on another school's bandwagon simply because its football program is good.

I'd be all in for Duke to beat the Buckeyes by 20...
this is why you're no buckeye.

you can call yourself one. you can claim that you'd root for the buckeyes against all foes except for one. heck, you can think that you're a buckeye because your avatar is of some buckeyed dead girl... which, seriously, is as gay as some closet flamer who has a poster of audrey hepburn in his room and thinks he's exhibiting his y chromosome. that's some latent gay behavior right there. think about it. your "dream girl" is some dead chubster you could never stick your dick in. and you called me sweetheart! i'd suggest a psychotherapist, chief. you're confused about which team you should root for and which sex you're attracted to. that's messed up. you being all gayed up i can deal with. a dookie, though? not so much.

Rob, thank you for verifying for all to see that you are not a true Buckeye. A true Buckeye would never want another team to beat any OSU team in any sporting event.

Also, and you can rant and rave all you want in any manner you want, there is no way in hell you are going to convince the vast majority of us here, or the vast majority of people in general, that at the ripe age of 20 and being a fan of OSU football and Duke basketball doesn't smack of the epitome of being a bandwagon fan.

Now in 25 years, which hopefully the last 15 or so years of that time Duke has slipped into basketball mediocrity and no one cares about them nationally, you can come back here and proclaim that even though Duke has sucked for the past 15 years, they are still your number one basketball team....then the bandwagon label might be removed. Chances are, many of us here will still call you a bandwagon fan, and harken back to this time, because it is fun.

But even if Duke basketball goes to shit for the next 50 years, and you still maintain Duke is your #1 basketball team....you will still not be a Buckeye.

Cheer for OSU football, but osu_buckguy hit it on the head when he said,

i have more respect for a scum fan who loves everything maize and blue than a part-time, pick-and-choose "buckeye."

I wouldn't root against either team...

I would want Duke to win but I wouldn't hate it if Ohio State won also...

If that's semantics then so be it...but I don't think it's wrong to say I'd never root AGAINST Ohio State...

So you WOULD root against them?

That doesn't make much sense...how is that statement a "Fail."

Don't flatter yourself sweetheart...

I just spelled rebuttal wrong...my bad

You are not a Buckeye. Buckyle is correct.

Okay, let's play with this scenario a little bit...

Say in my situation, I met Ohio State (Woman A) and Duke (Woman B) at the same time...I was introduced by a friend to both of them at the same party...

I fell in love with Ohio State (Woman A) because I loved everything about her, who she was, what she stood for, and the types of people she associated with...

HOWEVER, I became really good friends with Duke (Woman B). We hang out we have similar interests but it's not really a love affair...BUT I find out that she is an excellent painter, something I'm extremely interested in, and I find that I enjoy her paintings far more than I do those of Ohio State (Woman A). NOT because she's a better painter but because I like her paintings more...

I marry Ohio State (Woman A) and root for her in everything that she does...including painting...because I love her, stand by her and view her as #1 in my heart as a person...

HOWEVER, my good friend Duke (Woman B) enters an art competition with my wife Ohio State (Woman A). Of course I'm going to hope that both of them do well, but I can't help that I enjoy my good friend Duke (Woman B)'s paintings much better than my wife Ohio State (Woman A)'s.

THEREFORE.

In the art competition, I root for Duke (Woman B) to finish first and Ohio State (Woman A) to finish a close second...but if that were to be reversed I would still be ecstatic.

You obviously aren't married.

Thinking somebody else's art is better than your wife's is a whole galaxy different from wanting somebody else to win. I'm married to an artist, you can trust me on this one. :tongue2:

Let's try this again...

I was raised a Duke fan...by a man who ATTENDED Ohio State, has brothers who attended and PLAYED for Ohio State and lived in North Carolina for long enough to pick up a Duke allegiance simply because he loved the sport of basketball

So you were raised a Duke fan by your father, although you later claim his allegiance is to Ohio State?

My dad has bookshelves full of VHS tapes and notebooks full of handwritten statistics from the 1997 season and further. He tapes every game he can get on TV and replays them as soon as he can to handwrite every statistic. It's more reliable than the statistics you'd get online and sometimes on TV.

When he's bored, he'll go back and grab a random set of tapes and watch some Duke basketball games from random years at random times...

That makes it sound like his allegiance is to Duke.

...if I moved elsewhere and suddenly became a fan of another team, I wouldn't expect anyone to take me seriously either...

Kind of like if someone moved to North Carolina and started rooting for Duke?

...if you asked my dad what his #1 team is in basketball he'd without a doubt say Ohio State...you don't play basketball will Mel Nowell from the time they were kids all the way through college and not have a heartstring tied to Buckeye basketball...

So does your dad have handwritten statistics and shelves full of VHS tapes of his #1 basketball team, Ohio State, or just the team he became a bandwagon fan of when he moved to North Carolina?

Post all the :roll2: faces you want, but the fact of the matter is that you aren't making any fucking sense.

And that's why...

Maybe we've got a differing view on what makes a "bandwagon fan"...

...but my dad has been following Duke since he lived and worked in NC back in the 80's...his best friend still lives in Chapel Hill and is an adamant UNC fan...anyone who has a passive bind to a school wouldn't take the time to follow it the way my dad does...

When I lived with my parents their entire television set-up was based upon whether or not they could get as many Ohio State football games and Duke basketball games as possible...

My dad has bookshelves full of VHS tapes and notebooks full of handwritten statistics from the 1997 season and further. He tapes every game he can get on TV and replays them as soon as he can to handwrite every statistic. It's more reliable than the statistics you'd get online and sometimes on TV.

Does he have any tangible tie to Duke?

Not in the slightest...

...but do I find that his fandom is "bandwagon"?

Absolutely not...no "bandwagon" fan would follow their team as in depth as just described...

Now me on the other hand...

I don't have as much free time as he does...being retired gives you an added edge...but I could easily find myself doing the same thing...

Hypothetically speaking, do you think your father have started following Duke basketball in the 80's if they were going 17-13, 10-17, 11-17 all those years, never playing in a post-season tournament (like in '80-'83) rather than 24-10, 23-8, 37-3, 24-9, 28-7, 28-8, 29-9 playing in the NCAA every year and making 4 Final Four's ('84-'90)?

Another hypothetical....if OSU basketball and Duke basketball had their records reversed for your lifetime, do you still think that Duke would be your favorite?
