iPhone/iPad App Recommendations & Reviews

sepia5

JoePa apologists = Pendejo
I know we already have a thread for AT&T and iPhone related news, but I thought a thread dedicated solely to making app recommendations (or providing warnings) might be a good idea (mods, if you disagree, just delete this or merge it with the existing thread). I'll recommend a few I really like.

1. RedLaser - Dryden provided a really good review in the iPhone thread. I just downloaded it for $1.99 and think it will be very useful in the future.

2. Google Mobile App - The thing that is so nice about it is that you can make Google searches by speaking your search terms. Also, if you're looking for a store, restaurant, etc. while you're on the road, you can speak the search, find it, and launch it directly into the basic iPhone maps feature and get directions.

3. WOXY - My favorite, once-terrestrial radio station that is now web based has an app that will allow you to stream the station.

4. Slacker Radio - Pandora, but better. Unlimited song skips, and I think it may have a better library.

5. Remote - I think it's only useful if you have a Mac with iTunes on it, but it essentially uses a local wireless network to turn your iPhone into a remote control for iTunes. There are some things that they could do to improve on this app, but it's a great idea. Anything that facilitates my docile laziness is essential.

6. Fluent News - I'm hesitant to recommend this because I've had so many crashing problems, but this app consolidates all sorts of news sorces into one app, and a recent update seems to have largely resolved the crashing problem.

7. Intrix Traffic - The best free app for viewing traffic conditions that I've found, but I think it only works on highways and interstates. Nevertheless, I check it every night before I head home because I have to deal with a really unpredictable stretch of I-95 between New York and Boston.

As a bonus for you beer lovers, I hear RateBeer is scheduled to release an app next month!

SimCity - I don't pay for apps, but this was the exception. Easy to play and addicting.

BoxedIn - fun puzzle game

Chipotle App - yep

BuckeyePlanet App - Nice interface with BPspy, UserCP, vBookie, PM, etc (it doesn't exist yet, but someone is going to create it)

I have a lot of time killers for class.

Facebook - pretty great, easy to use, it's Facebook.
Elevens - only app I've ever paid for, it's a card game.
FML - F My Life. A bunch of unfortunate, brief, funny stories.
TFLN - Texts from last night. Similar to FML, only better imo.
Twitterific - this is how I keep up to date on the sports world if I'm not at home.
AIM - chat for free.
IMDb - if you love movies.
Yelp - good for finding places to eat, places to get beer, etc.

Probably good for you college students. :tongue2:

Ragdoll Blaster - has about 105 levels of puzzles, very fun/addicting ($1.99)

Lets Golf! - It was free when I got it. Probably the best free game app that I have. (free)

Lose It! - really good app to keep track of you calorie intake day by day (free)

IMDB - Pretty good if you like movies/tv shows (free)

Flixster - Finds movies and theaters near you with showtimes, reviews, etc. (free)

Papi Jump - fun pass the time game, pretty much just infinite jumping up blocks (free)

Good to see that Apple is letting googles apps back in the app store, I read a few months back when the droid came out that they had pulled all of googles apps. I don't know if you guys have any of the torrent apps for your phones, but there's a few for android that let you control utorrent from your phone, assuming you open the correct ports on your firewall, it's great for "have you checked this out?" and being able to search and have it on my pc when I get home.

I'm also a cheapskate who hates to pay for apps. Red Laser was the exception. So far I'll 2nd:

Red Laser - Thanks Dryden
IMDB
Flixster
Facebook

And add:
ScoreMobile - best quick way to get scores I have found, but doesn't refresh as fast as I'd like
College Football Live
Big Ten Network - was good during the season because they had the highlights from every game but for some reason they are no longer there
Directv - can dvr shows/games while out
Battery LED - cool app that let's you know how much battery life you have for different functions

Does anyone know what the policy is when you get a new phone? Do you lose all the apps on your hard drive, will an AT&T store swap them over to a new phone like they'll do with your contact info, or do you get to re-download the $ apps you've already paid for w/out having to pay a second time?

Facebook (duh)

Tweetie 2 - best Twitter app I've tried

The Weather Channel - good if you live in a place that has, like, weather.

Yelp - already mentioned; use it all the time

Lose It - already mentioned; a great app for counting calories (I've lost 5 lbs in two weeks so far!)

Shazam - can use it to figure out the title and artist of a song that currently playing in the room

Sportacular - for sports scores, etc.

Amazon Kindle - syncs with my Kindle 2. LOVE THIS.

Local Books - find nearby libraries, bookstores, book events. I'm a geek.

Some more:

Shazam: good call
Remote: I use it (don't own a mac) and have my computer hooked up to my stereo feeding speakers to all rooms in my tiny place. Awesome.
Pandora Box: Find out when paid apps are free for a short time, get them.
Stanza: Read books and papers, etc., while offline (great for underground for you subway folks).
Guitar ToolKit: I mentioned this in another thread, and it costs $10, but it is absolutely awesome. Very accurate guitar tuner, metronome, chords, etc. This is the only app I ever paid for, and it is totally worth it.
Doodle chat: draw explicit artwork and send it to your girl
VeryChat: text to people overseas for free, if you need that. Send video and pics too.
Loopt: Again a good app for urban folk-- update your friends (and vice versa) with where you are, and with pics
iVidCam: take video if you have the 3G but not the 3Gs

Actually, some REALLY good apps:

OpenSSH: transfer files wirelessly between iPhone and your computer
SBSettings: one stop shopping for turning on and off lots of settings
Categories: organize icons into folders for less screens
Cycorder: very good video for non 3Gs
Winterboard: theme your iPhone
PDANet: tether your iPhone for laptop over 3G
BackGrounder: run any app you want in the background
Kirikae: use multiple apps quickly without going to main screen

All require a jailbreak though. . .

Pandora - reminds me of back in the stone ages, when I used to listen to the radio... except no commercials and the most of the songs are good.

Galcon - perfect game for the iPhone/touch. Online multiplayer is a blast. Easy to play for a few minutes, or a few hours, which makes it ideal for the iphone.

Civ Revolution - not a short game, but an amazing amount of depth for an iphone game.

mint.com - only if you use the site for your finances.

solebon - solitaire. wife is addicted.

Buckeye Sports Reader - good for a quick check of BSB message boards and news.

Sportacular - what I use to get my sports scores. Looking for other recommendations on this one.
