Iphone, Android, Blackberry App

A true mobile solution remains towards the top of our priority list, but there are some significant complicating factors that have led to the commensurately significant delay. Chief amongst those are the state of vbulletin 4 (it's been a trainwreck over the last 18+ months), the promise of another bit of forum software called Xenforo (developed by original vB coders from scratch in a "let's take everything we've learned and do it right in a modern setting" approach), and some issues related to the fact that we (like a number of other sites) have decided to sit tight with vB 3.8.x until the dust settles, which limits our options significantly.

There's even an option with vB (including our version) now to have native (iOS and Andriod) and dedicated apps for the forums, but that has (so far) appeared to be something of an unmitigated technical disaster. Complications and disasters we don't need.

So something *is* coming. I don't have an ETA, or even (yet) the knowledge of the form in which it will arrive. Tapatalk and Forumrunner are not high on my list as they're external solutions. They're not off the table, but the goal is to have something that's completely internal, seamless, and not yet another opportunity to have problems.

These days for a number of reasons, some (but certainly not all) of which are about my own personal situation, I have to take the "measure twice, cut once" approach. Which is to say I can experiment less (I experimented a lot early on, with mixed results), and do a lot more planning and due diligence before making changes. As this change is directly impacted by a bigger issue (where we're going (or not) in terms of forum software), it's been a slow and tedious process. I hope and expect the end result will be well worth the wait.

One consideration regarding Tapatalk and other apps is that they mesh the forums that participate and make a larger online community. I can see forum users migrating to these types of applications when large numbers of the forums they participate in are a part of that community. It provides access to a lot of new sites you may not have otherwise found.

Gotcha.

Forum runner such as tapatalk or is it something different?

Same thing, really, just a different flavor. It was bought out by Internet Brands which owns vBulletin, so it's since been built into vB as part of the core product. No matter what we upgrade to, we'll support a true mobile experience. vB5 should be out in limited form any time now, we just need to give it enough time to be full-featured and stable.

I hate to be a nagger, but any update on vb5?

It's on something like beta version 21, so it's getting very close to a full release. It's currently missing some major features that they'll work in and test after that core release, and we'll move when those are in place and it's stable.

I don't see a scenario that has us entering next season on this software, indeed, my bet is that we're making the move towards the end of winter or the beginning of Spring.

It just has to be when the new platform is reliable.

Dang...21 betas? Is that normal?

Thank Clarity. Ill let it go now :)

Don't let it go, it's one of the main reasons we'll make the move.

I just meant 21 beta bug-patching versions. Basically they take it beta, put it out in the wild (to the customers willing to use their boards as test beds) and then patch bugs as they come in.

21 rounds of that is a lot, but my understanding is that much of the code is written fresh, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Either way, for every round they go through, that just means fewer headaches for us when we switch.

Sorry for the delay!
