Chief amongst those are the state of vbulletin 4 (it's been a trainwreck over the last 18+ months), the promise of another bit of forum software called Xenforo (developed by original vB coders from scratch in a "let's take everything we've learned and do it right in a modern setting" approach), and some issues related to the fact that we (like a number of other sites) have decided to sit tight with vB 3.8.x until the dust settles, which limits our options significantly.
There's even an option with vB (including our version) now to have native (iOS and Andriod) and dedicated apps for the forums, but that has (so far) appeared to be something of an unmitigated technical disaster. Complications and disasters we don't need.
So something *is* coming. I don't have an ETA, or even (yet) the knowledge of the form in which it will arrive. Tapatalk and Forumrunner are not high on my list as they're external solutions. They're not off the table, but the goal is to have something that's completely internal, seamless, and not yet another opportunity to have problems.
These days for a number of reasons, some (but certainly not all) of which are about my own personal situation, I have to take the "measure twice, cut once" approach. Which is to say I can experiment less (I experimented a lot early on, with mixed results), and do a lot more planning and due diligence before making changes. As this change is directly impacted by a bigger issue (where we're going (or not) in terms of forum software), it's been a slow and tedious process. I hope and expect the end result will be well worth the wait.
