Iowa @ tOSU, Sat Oct 22, 12pm, FOX

Hard to believe that Iowa was ever ranked #1*. Chuck Long was their QB. They finished the season 10-2 (losing to Ohio State and UCLA in the Rose bowl), and ranked AP: #10 in the AP and #9 in the Coaches Poll.

Chuck Long declared that he would return for his senior season. He became an instant Heisman Trophy candidate, and Iowa was a preseason top five team. After three weeks in 1985, the Hawkeyes ascended to No. 1 in the national rankings for the second time in team history (1960). Three weeks later, in the sixth game of the season, No. 1 Iowa faced No. 2 Michigan at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa trailed 10–9 as the Hawkeyes regained possession of the football at their own 22-yard line with just 5:27 remaining in the game. Long drove the Iowa team to the 12-yard line with two seconds remaining to set up kicker Rob Houghtlin's game-winning field goal as time expired. After a rout of Northwestern, the Hawkeyes were upset by the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio. The loss to Ohio State cost Iowa their No. 1 ranking, but the Hawkeyes still won the Big Ten title outright for the first time in 27 years.

* Apparently they were also ranked #1 during the 1960 and 1961 seasons too.

I'm predicting 21-0 at the end of the 1st Quarter and then we coast to a final of around 40-7. I really want it to be a shutout but something foolish always happens at the end of the game or a fluke somewhere in the middle. A clean 4 quarter game where our backups get sprinkled in instead of wholesale would show the true dominance of this team.

My brother and I were there

Spielman was absolutely possessed

The tape on his ankles came undone and he did not care. He ran around with three feet of tape trailing from each ankle.

On a 4th down for Iowa in the north end, Long hands the ball to Ronnie Harmon and a huge hole opens in the B gap, right in front of me, staring down from C deck. Spielman filled the hole, flattens Harmon like a frog under a combat boot and charges off the field with his fists in the air. Hayden Fry cried like a little girl about how loud it was all night; the aftermath of that play was the only time it was truly loud. That, and Byars’ score to take the final lead vs Illinois in ‘84 were the only times I ever heard the Shoe get really loud when the track was still there. That track made getting really loud nearly impossible

2000 says Wikipedia, but I’ll take the word of a fellow BPer over that garbage barge
The track was removed and the field lowered as part of the major renovations of the Shoe, which I believe was a several years long project, so somewhere in that 98-2000 timeline. That project also included the large permanent stands in the "open" end of the stadium and adding seats in "C" deck which resulted in the siding that covers some of the original outside of the stadium. ( if my memory is at all correct)

Iowa has 31 receptions by all of their wide receivers combined.

MHJr has 31 receptions
Emeka Egbuka has 35

6 other Buckeye receivers have receptions

Iowa wide receivers have a total of (checks notes)... (runs spreadsheet)... (carry the 3)...
ONE touchdown this season.

5 Buckeye wide-outs have at least one TD this year
JSN is not one of them

HEALTHY OHIO STATE DEFENSE APPEARS PRIMED TO FEAST ON WORST OFFENSE IT'S FACED ALL SEASON AGAINST IOWA

133983_h.jpg

The Ohio State defense has been seeking a shutout all season. It may not get a better chance than this weekend to check that off its list.

After allowing just 22 points over the first two weeks, Buckeye linebacker Cody Simon stated his displeasure in the fact that Ohio State had given up any at all.

“We want to shut people out,” Simon said after a 33-point win over Arkansas State on Sept. 10. “We want to be the best defense in the country, and that's the goal.”

The Buckeyes have either reached or neared most of their defensive goals through the first six games, ranking fifth in the nation in total defense, seventh in pass defense, ninth in rushing defense and 10th in scoring defense. A shutout, however, has eluded Ohio State, despite giving up an average of just 15.7 points per game. In fact, Ohio State has yet to hold an opponent to single digits in any game this season.

In Iowa, the Buckeyes face an opponent that’s averaging just 14.7 points per game – fourth-worst in the FBS – and the Hawkeyes have flirted with a goose egg in the scoring department all season. Iowa has scored seven or less on three occasions and 14 points or less in all but two of its six contests.

Three Things To Watch from the Iowa Hawkeyes

Ohio State vs. Iowa: 2022 game preview and prediction

The Buckeyes will be looking for their 28th-straight home win in Big Ten play when they host Iowa on Saturday.

1243871592.0.jpg

Summary
There is really no reason this game should be close. Even though the Hawkeyes might be the best defense Ohio State has faced this year, there’s no question the Buckeye offense is the best the Hawkeyes have seen. C.J. Stroud has shown he is able to carve up tough defenses during his career. Just look what he did to Utah in the Rose Bowl, and Notre Dame in this year’s season opener.

Plus, there is a revenge factor for Ryan Day, who was a member of the Ohio State coaching staff in 2017 when the Buckeyes were embarrassed by the Hawkeyes in Iowa City. Even though almost nobody on this year’s team was on the 2017 squad, Day likely showed his team tape from the 2017 game just to get his team ready to lay a hurting on the Hawkeyes.

The scariest thing about this game, as well as the rest of the regular season, is Ohio State hasn’t really been healthy in the first half of the season. Smith-Njigba has barely played, and Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson each have missed games because of injuries they have picked up in the first half of the year. After having last week off, the Buckeyes should be rested and ready to go. Along with key players getting healthier, there isn’t quite as much wear on this team, since they have been able to be cautious with players, and some blowout games have allowed for players lower on the depth chart to see some time on the field.

Iowa also had last weekend off, but that isn’t enough time to overhaul their putrid offense. Maybe Alex Padilla sees some time if Petras is ineffective early, but with the unimaginative game plan of offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, it’s hard to imagine the Hawkeyes doing much on offense that is really going to surprise the Buckeye defense. Even if Iowa is able to get a few scores, they don’t have the firepower to be able to match what the Buckeyes should put on the scoreboard at home.

LGHL Prediction: Ohio State 55, Iowa 14
