Iowa Hawkeyes (Official Thread of The Under)

Despite 22 years leading Iowa, Kirk Ferentz claims ignorance of player mistreatment within program

Ferentz is short on answers as former Hawkeyes allege mistreatment during their time with the program

It took until the last week for veteran Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz to become aware of allegations of widespread mistreatment of players within his program. That's shocking enough, especially with the allegations having to do with bullying and racist comments.

Now, add the context that Ferentz is the longest-tenured coach in the country at one school. The widely respected Iowa legend will turn 65 on Aug. 1 as he begins his 22nd season at Iowa this fall.

If he makes that far.

"I don't want to say I was blind-sided," Ferentz said during a Sunday call with media, "… but the bottom line is we don't want anybody to leave this place not feeling like this was a good experience."

There is apparently a long way to go before Iowa becomes a feel-good program. We know that because powerful, highly-compensated, highly-regarded strength coach Chris Doyle has been put on administrative leave. An investigation is ongoing regarding alleged mistreatment -- including racist comments and actions -- by Doyle.

Tweets began being published by Iowa players on Friday and picked up over the weekend. An estimated 40 ex-Hawkeyes have come forward to share their negative experiences with Doyle while involved with the program.

Just sayin'; It now sounds like Ferentz is trying to save his pwn job by claiming ignorance. Regardless of what he actually knows or doesn't know, it was his job to know.

Sunday evening, Doyle issued a statement of his own.

For 21 years, I have committed myself to Iowa Football and loved with all my heart, every single one of the young men I’ve gotten to work with and every minute we have spent together in the weight room, on the field and as friends and fellow Hawkeyes. I can only imagine how much courage it took for them to speak out on these serious matters. I am proud of them.

My job has been to give feedback to our players for 21 years and now I’m receiving feedback myself. I can take it and won’t hide from it. It saddens me to hear the stories of their difficult experiences while in our program, in addition to the outpouring of stories we are hearing across the country.

It is time to listen, learn and grow. Most importantly, it is a time for action.

I have been asked to remain silent, but that is impossible for me to do. There have been statements made about my behavior that are not true. I do no it claim to be perfect. I have made mistakes, learned lessons and like every American citizen, can do better. At no time have I ever crossed the line of unethical behavior or bias based upon race. I do not make racist comments and I do not tolerate people who do. I am confident that a complete review of the body of work over 21 years will speak for itself and I am trusting the process to respect the rights and experiences of all parties involved. There are countless men of character who are better fathers, husbands, activists, leaders and contributors top society due to their experience at Iowa Football. The record will show this.

Just sayin': If someone of authority at Iowa asked him to remain silent and he didn't, that may spell the end of career at Iowa right there. He really had nothing to gain by making his statement. If he is (basically) cleared of the accusations, he can then issue his statement and go back to work. If they find the accusations to be true and they decide to terminate him, he hires a lawyer and sues (to get any money remaining on his employment contract) for wrongful termination, etc.

Doyle knows he’s gone regardless of what/when he says anything. The second more than one former player uttered his name Iowa had to take actions in response. Doyle can never be “cleared” if Iowa (the university, not just its football program) has any hopes of getting past such claims.

Monday, Iowa confirmed that one individual connected to the football program has tested positive for COVID-19. The school also stated there were 236 negative tests. It’s not been revealed whether the positive test came from a player, coach, staffer or other individuals.
