Presser Bullets: Ryan Day Says Emeka Egbuka is "One Of The Best Receivers In The Country," Carnell Tate Could Have Played if Needed

A few freezing ends to drives in Ohio State's first half only paved the way for a sizzling second half.

After carrying a 7-0 lead into halftime against Iowa, the Buckeyes flew away from the Hawkeyes with a 21-0 outburst in the third quarter, polishing off a 35-7 win from there.
Off a three-touchdown performance from Emeka Egbuka, Ryan Day called the wide receiver one of the nation's best in his postgame press conference. He also felt Ohio State did a great job running the ball and stopping the run, which was a point of emphasis entering the game. Day also liked how his team responded to adversity after a clunky first half.
Day added that wide receiver Carnell Tate, who did not play after being listed as questionable on Saturday, could have played in an emergency and should return for Ohio State's showdown at No. 6 Oregon next week.
  • On what the feeling was at halftime: "It's a mixture of feelings. ... On defense there was an energy, but on offense, it's like, if we just take care of the football, we'll get this game going. ... Not that you like to see those kind of things, but it is good to face some adversity and see how the team responds."
  • Day was happy with the way his team ran the ball and defended the run. "We have a reference point moving forward. I think this will give us a lot of confidence going forward. ... They got a challenge and we answered that. ... Our focus is, when we leave the locker room today, we're focused on Oregon."
  • On the defense: "I thought our guys were all flying around today. ... When you come into games, especially for guys like Jack (Sawyer) and JT (Tuimoloau) ... force them to throw the ball and then here come the sacks. ... You saw some big plays happen."
  • On whether his perspective as an offensive coach makes him more impressed with his defense's play: "There's no question. And it gives you confidence to go for it on fourth down early in the game like that. ... Those (turnovers) are huge in a game. ... Any time we can do that it's a game-changer."
  • On Emeka Egbuka: "I think Emeka's one of the best receivers in the country. ... You see a complete player. He's a captain of our team. He's a warrior. He does all the dirty work. ... I think, again, one of the better receivers in the entire country."
  • On Tate's status: "Carnell was available, he could have played ... but we decided to hold him, get him to 100 percent."
  • On whether forcing fumbles is practiced by the defense: "I think any defense will tell you that they work on punching the ball out and our defense did that."
  • On why Jeremiah Smith's been able to find the field quickly: "Overall maturity. Physical maturity, he's big and strong. ... Emotional maturity. He practices hard every day, he's avoiding distractions. ... But he also has a lot of confidence and we have a lot of confidence (in him). ... He also came in with a great work ethic and a great mindset."
  • While Day noted there are a few throws Will Howard will want back, he felt that there were many more great throws, especially in the red zone, and that his feet were an "X factor."
  • On whether he was more impressed with the running game or run defense: "I thought the offensive line played hard ... I thought Chip put a good game plan together and called a good game. The running backs ran hard. ... But the defense showed up. If we can keep grinding on these Tuesday and Wednesday practices, we can keep building on this."
  • Day is looking forward to the challenge that Oregon presents. "This is gonna be a great opponent."
  • On the linebackers: "You look at Higgins for (Iowa), number 34, he had 174 tackles for them last year. ... Some of the great linebackers out there they've played a lot ... and the more Sonny plays, the more he's able to diagnose plays. ... Every rep he gets is an investment in his future and he'll play faster and faster the more he plays."
Ohio State players Will Howard, Emeka Egbuka, Donovan Jackson, Sonny Styles and Jack Sawyer also met with reporters following the game and you can see what they had to say in the videos in the link.

Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz: “You Just Look At [Ohio State’s] Talent And Evaluate It, It’s Really Impressive”

149588_h.jpg

“The first half went probably about the way we wanted it to. Obviously, it would have been good to score some points there, but to be down seven at halftime was encouraging, certainly. The second half, obviously, things didn't go our way. We gave up a drive and then three turnovers. To beat a team like this, it's going to be tough to win or lose the turnover battle. It ended up being the way it went. There was some turbulence out there. Certainly, I thought our guys kept playing. We ought to be proud of that way. But the bottom line is you've got to play clean football against a team like this. We weren't able to do that. They get some credit on that, too.”

“It wasn't perfect today, but we did some good things. Obviously, it would have been better if we got Kaleb going a little bit faster and what have you. But again, our opponent had something to do with that. There's no magic formula.”

“It's like everything that we all want to speculate on. But it's how things go over 12 weeks or 12 games that you really make that assessment. You watch or look at their talent and evaluate it. It's really impressive. They're a veteran up front. The receivers are really good players and [Jeremiah Smith] might be as good as I've seen at that point. And then, two good running backs and the quarterback has done a really nice job. That was a really good fit for them, I think, in getting him to be here. So, you know, you look at them, they can run the ball, they can throw it. They've got a good scheme. [Offensive Coordinator Chip] Kelly does a great job, and I know [Ryan Day is] involved with that too. So they're a good football team. But you've got to play out the season. You never know what's going to happen.”

Huh, I didn’t know Coach Tressel was writing Kirk’s material these days.

The defense was ridiculous today, pure Silver Bullet play and figured it was a hiccup last game. We'll find out next week. But my short recap is a dominant OL (fuck yeah and finally), can run the ball against a legit defense, and Howard is decisive. Defense is better served up at the line on games like this and we made the right adjustments. Easily the most well rounded game this season. Great work today, that was fun to watch.

I have to shout out Sonny Styles.

That was the one player on the defense where I think we were all waiting. Well he showed up and he played outstanding.

If he can continue to build then wow can this be a special defense considering the talent around them.

1st half went how we wanted except scoring points

:slappy::slappy::slappy:

I find that so funny

Just a few brief notes....

1. The first half was frustrating, as the Buckeyes ran 32 plays for 199 yards (6.2 average) but managed to score only 7 points thanks to a fumble (Jeremiah Smith is human, after all), an interception (bad decision, bad throw), and a turnover on downs (gutsy move, questionable play call). Then over the first 19 minutes of the second half, the Buckeyes racked up four touchdowns thanks in large part to the defense forcing turnovers on three straight Hawkeye possessions (an interception and a pair of fumbles courtesy of Reno Jesus McNamara).

2. The first team defense held Iowa scoreless and forced three turnovers, while limiting the Hawkeyes to 148 yards on 40 plays (3.7 average) and just 7 first downs on 8 possessions.

3. After five games, this team seems like a high-powered offense with a Tresselball vibe. I still question whether Will Howard can win a big game by himself, but with the rushing attacking and opportunistic defense he may not need to.

Pretty cool what $20 million gets you. Now go beat the SEC.
Yeah, pity the programs that spend even more to watch us beat them.

edit: What’s cooler than NIL money is Boston U hiring Billy O’ away from us so Chip Kelly can come in with a championship offense. We oughta send BU a nice gift basket.

Krenzel and Cardale didn't have to do it by themselves, and I don't think Howard will have to either. This team on paper is better than 2002 and 2014. Now just a question if they can finish the job.
