Interesting Article on Admissions to Another B10 School

Geez, that couldn't describe several thousand Buckeye fans and their hatred of Michigan (or vice-versa), could it?

Or USC and UCLA fans? Or Alabama and Auburn fans? Or Texas and Texas A&M fans? Somebody stop me!

Although, I have to ask - are you serious? Trying to compare historical sports rivalries that go back 100 years or so to an academic rivalry (that apparently only exists in your mind) doesn't prove your point...it just makes you a nerd...:tongue2:

Plus, the kids that left OSU and graduated from Miami talked about how great the school was. What made it great? Smaller classes and teachers that care so much they call your house if you miss a class or two.

Uh great, so the Miami experience doesn't differ much from high school? :roll1:

I read this thread with mixed feelings... Ord and I have reached a point of respectfull disagreement on the open/selective admissions issue and I put Tibor on my 'ignore' list.

As an adjunct at Miami (I taught English 111 and 112, and now teach a grad course in the MAT program) I can tell you that I never called a kid in if he/she missed a couple of courses, yet I like to think that I have always been a caring teacher wether it's a college freshman, a grad student or one of my high school or elementary students. I never felt my job was to flunk people, nor did I feel that I had a responsibility to pass them. My job was to mentor and guide... I guess I liked the idea of being a classroom coach.

I managed to get in and out of Jim Rhodes OSU. I am always grateful for the fact that I was given the opportunity to go to a school with all the assets that OSU had. I didn't find it indifferent, but I found that I had to own the problems and initiate the solutions. What a lesson for life!

When I got out I was immediately surrounded by other second lieutenants from all over the country... private, public and public Ivy schools... and I saw first hand that I had received an excellent value in my OSU education. That has continued through my years as an educator... the other professionals I respected at work often had connections to OSU and seemed to be more in touch with professional development and trends than those who had gone to schools with "better academic reputations." OSU had taught me that education was a life long process.

I love the place, always have, always will.

I believe some of your perceptions and opinions may be somewhat misguided. I am a graduate student at Fisher-Ohio State and attended Yale for undergraduate. I grew up in Cincinnati and pretty close to Miami Univ.

Ohio State is a research powerhouse that believes bigger is better, not better is better. Ohio State's rise in prominence is a recent phenomenon that is likely occuring because Ohio State's leadership and policy making coupled with its economies of scale (bigger means more synergy and power) is building momentum.

Ohio State is an A&M Big 10 school that is only beginning to realize dividends that Miami has enjoyed for practically a sesquicentennial. Yes, great job for recently improving however what about the last 150 years? Be respectful to your older brothers, regardless of if they now resent your newly founded rise in stature according to other higher education peers.

The Virginia-Ohio analogy is good that was previously cited. I think Texas might also be a good example.

Virginia: Miami is analogous to William & Mary, Ohio State is analogous to a hybrid of VA Tech and UVA
Texas: Miami is analogous to Rice University, Ohio State is analogous to Texas-Austin.

For an "ivy league" experience and quasi-environment, Miami does deliver although Oxford, Ohio is an insular and sheltered community that has a niche with middle class, upper middle class, and affluent 18-22 year olds.

I would have enjoyed attending Miami. They are not on the same dimension (compare their MAC athletic budget to OSU's Big 10) and they serve a different niche so support your in-state brothers.

welcome to the board, but how in the hell do you dig up a thread from over a year ago and use that as your first post?

It looked like a decent topic to revive. I just recently got to Columbus and am now checking out the Buckeye forums. My brother and many high school friends attended MU and I wanted to see what the sentiment was.

I'm not a huge football nut but going to school here will likely force me to be. MU is so screwed this year... Minnesota, Syracuse, Colorado, Cincinnati, Vanderbilt.

Ohio State better not pull a Michigan this weekend.
