Indians Acquire Brian Bixler: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
The Indians acquired shortstop Brian Bixler from the Pirates for infielder Jesus Brito, according to a team press release. MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says Bixler will compete with Jason Donald, Mark Grudzielanek, and Luis Rodriguez for a utility infield role.

Bixler, 27, hit .275/.343/.439 at Triple A this year - his third stint at the level. Heading into 2009 Baseball America labeled him an "average defensive shortstop," noting his ability to play second base and predicting a utility future. Brito, 22, hit .353/.431/.567 for the Indians' rookie and short-season clubs in '09.

Good for Bixler... he's a hometown kid from Perkins high school by Sandusky, same school as Tyson Gentry and Brandon Schnittker. He made the minor league all-star game at shortstop a few years ago but hasn't put it together in the majors yet. It'd be cool to see him come around for the Indians.

Not sure what you guys were expecting as far as FA moves goes this offseason. The organization lost a lot of money, so these bargain bin moves are all you're gonna get. It's pretty prevalent league wide. Most teams just aren't spending.

We're in full on rebuild mode. You make these kind of moves in the hopes that you find somebody that can act as a buffer until young talent is ready. These kind of moves maybe warranted criticism when they were trying to compete. They don't now.

Pitchers and catchers report in 28 days. Color me quasi-excited. At least this season begins without any unfounded championship hopes. It'll be a year to watch a lot of youth and hopefully build some hope for the future. Kind of like being a Pirates fan for the last 17 years...

I just noticed Keith Law's prospect rankings on ESPN. He has the Indians 4th overall, behind Rangers, Red Sox, Rays. (I'd paste parts of the article but I have insider and I'm not sure what is premium.)

Keith Law: 2010 organizational rankings - ESPN

He also has a top 100 prospects in baseball list.

Keith Law: Top 100 prospects of 2010 (Nos. 1-25) - ESPN

The Indians have 5 on the list.
(Age, highest level reached last year, 2009 ranking)

#3 Carlos Santana - C (23, AA, #13)
#26 Lonnie Chisenhall - 3B (21, AA, NR)
#51 Hector Rondon - RHP (21, AAA, NR)
#71 Michael Brantley - OF (22, Majors, NR)
#100 Nick Hagadone - LHP (24, A, #81)

If we can get solid contributions from 3 of these guys this season, it might not be such a bad year. After all, the 95 Indians started out as a bunch of kids too, at some level, before that. Where does everyone see Black Magic Catcher fitting in this year? Bigs or one more year of seasoning?

Santana should be up at some point this season depending on how Marson handles the big league duties and how Santana takes to AAA.

As for the rest (my opinion, obviously):

#26 Lonnie Chisenhall - 3B (21, AA, NR) Still needs development. AA this year, AAA in '11 and maybe a cup of coffee in Cleveland Sep of that year.
#51 Hector Rondon - RHP (21, AAA, NR) I think he'll get a shot at some point this summer.
#71 Michael Brantley - OF (22, Majors, NR) Will fight for a starting OF job this spring.
#100 Nick Hagadone - LHP (24, A, #81) Should get a fast track through the system if he can stay healthy. Probably arriving in Cleveland at some point in 2011, or 2012 at the latest.

CastroTurf: Wright signed to Minor League deal

Here's another candidate for the bullpen: right-hander Jamey Wright.

The Indians signed the 35-year-old Wright to a Minor League contract with an invitation to camp. That's now four veteran relievers brought in through Minors contracts, as Wright joins Jason Grilli, Saul Rivera and left-hander Mike Gosling.

Wright has pitched for six teams over the last 14 seasons, compiling an 82-115 record and 5.03 ERA in 420 games, including 246 starts. He went 3-5 with a 4.33 ERA for the Royals last year, leading the team with 65 appearances out of the bullpen. He logged a career-high 75 appearances for the Rangers in '08.

The Indians now have 19 non-roster invitees coming to camp. Pitchers and catchers report in 12 days.

Jason Grilli, Saul Rivera, Mike Gosling and Jamey Wright is quite the epic battle for bullpen spots
